[Termes IGN] superposition d'imagesRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents results on SAR interferometry for data acquired in the Terrain Observation by Progressive Scans (TOPS) imaging mode. The rationale to retrieve accurate interferometric products in this mode is expounded, emphasizing the critical step of coregistration. Due to the particularities of the TOPS mode, a high Doppler centroid is present at burst edges, demanding a very high azimuth coregistration performance. A coregistration accuracy of around one tenth of a pixel, as it is usually recommended for stripmap interferometric data, could result in large undesired azimuth phase ramps in each TOPS burst. This paper presents two approaches based on the spectral diversity technique to precisely estimate this coregistration offset with the required accuracy and evaluates their performance. The effect of squint at burst edges in terms of an undesired impulse response shift during focusing and the impact on the interferometric coregistration performance is also addressed. Repeat-pass TOPS data acquired experimentally by TerraSAR-X are used to validate the proposed approaches. [Termes IGN] teneur totale en électronsRésumé : (Auteur) Phase artifacts in interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) images frequently degrade the interpretability of the phase and correlation signatures of terrain. Often, these distortions are attributed to spatially variable ionospheric propagation delays at two different SAR acquisition times. We present here L-band InSAR data from Iceland, California, and Hawaii. The California and Hawaii interferograms show no significant ionospheric artifacts, while the Iceland interferogram shows a maximum misregistration of three pixels in the azimuth direction, which leads to severe phase decorrelation artifacts in the InSAR image. We relate the misregistration of complex pixels seen in the interferograms to the gradient of the ionospheric total electron content (TEC) observed by global positioning system (GPS) data and confirm that indeed the phase artifacts in the Iceland interferogram are due to dispersive ionospheric propagation rather than other decorrelation factors such as neutral atmospheric delays. We develop a method to measure the spatial TEC variation at synthetic aperture length scales using dual-frequency GPS carrier phase data. We solve for the GPS data ambiguities using a low-resolution ionosphere reference derived from either available ionospheric observations or the GPS carrier phase data themselves. GPS observations show directly the level of ionospheric variability, and the spatial TEC gradient as observed by GPS predicts the misregistration of complex pixels in interferograms in all three areas. This confirmation of the cause of the image artifacts suggests that they can be routinely corrected from the InSAR data alone, provided that the sensor measures the change in TEC along the radar swath. [Termes IGN] mouvement de terrainRésumé : (Auteur) Land surface displacement is a phenomenon of ground movement, which may occur due to various reasons including unplanned mining. The quantification of land surface displacement through conventional field surveys is based on sparingly distributed point data, which may be insufficient for many applications. A detailed spatial and temporal monitoring of land surface displacements through remote sensing-based synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometry may be valuable. Over the last two decades, differential SAR interferometry (DInSAR) has been effectively used globally for the estimation of spatial land surface displacements caused due to natural and man-made hazards. However, it has not gained momentum in India, where occurrences of natural and man-made hazards are a common phenomenon. In this article, preliminary results from DInSAR to measure land surface displacement in Jharia coal fields have been presented. DInSAR results effectively identified the land surface displacement due to several mining activities in the region during a one-month period. [Termes IGN] Piton de la Fournaise (volcan)Résumé : (auteur) We combine ALOS-PALSAR coherence images with airborne LiDAR data, both acquired over the Piton de la Fournaise volcano (Reunion Island, France), to study the main errors affecting repeat-pass InSAR measurements and understand their causes. The high resolution DTM generated using LiDAR data is used to subtract out the topographic contribution from the interferogram and to improve the radar coherence maps. The relationship between LiDAR intensity and radar coherence is then analyzed over several typical volcanic surfaces: it helps to evaluate the coherence loss terms. Additionally, the geometric and physical properties of these surfaces have been measured in situ. Coherence deteriorates over pyroclastic deposits and rough lava flows due to volume and surface scattering. In the presence of vegetation, it is directly related to plant density: the higher the Leaf Area Index (LAI), the lower the coherence. The accuracy of InSAR measurements strongly decreases for LAI higher than 7.
