[Termes IGN] tâche claireRésumé : (Auteur) Chikurachki volcano (Nothern Kurile Islands Chain, Paramushir Island 50° 20'N, 155° 27'E; elevation 1816 m, stratovolcano) has been in a state of unrest for over twenty years. Its most recent eruption that began in April 2003 was preceded by an eruption between January May 2002. Thermal infrared images from the Japanese-United States' Advanced Spacebome Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER-5 TIR channels, 8-12 um, 90 m/pixel, Noise Equivalent Delta Temperature [NET] 0.1-0.3 K, onboard the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Terra polar-orbiting spacecraft) of a snow-covered Chikurachki Volcano taken in January 2003 show muted evidence of thermal activity. ASTER thermal infrared (TIR) images from February 2003, however, indicate warmer areas within the summit crater. Average whole-pixel temperatures of adjacent summit slopes are in the range of 250-252 K, while many summit-crater whole pixel temperatures are 2-6 K greater. A two component Planck solution for the warmer pixels yields a solution of 275-277 K for 10-15% of the Chikurachki summit crater and 285-295 K for 25-35% of a prominent "hotspot'* on its flank. An interpretation of this enhanced pre-eruption heat flow is the presence of surface melt water. The detection in ASTER data of such subtle precursory heat-flow enhancement, even retrospectively, raises important issues for remote monitoring of "dormant" snow-capped volcanoes, especially those that threaten nearby populations, like Mt. Rainier. [Termes IGN] volcanRésumé : (Auteur) An innovative, Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR)-based technique for improved automatic detection of volcanic Hotspots and thermal anomalies is proposed in this paper. It is mainly based on a multitemporal analysis of historical, long-term satellite records. Such a technique basically rests on the Robust AVHRR Techniques (RAT) approach, which has been already successfully applied to sevreral natural and environmental emergencies (e.g., fires, floods, earthquakes). In this work, the proposed technique has been tested on an extended set of eruptive events of Mt. Etna and Stromboli volcanoes. Results achieved, in terms of reliability (low false alarm rate) as well as of effectiveness (detection sensitivity), are described in detail. Moreover, the potential in low-level thermal anomaly detection, as possible pre-eruptive thermal signs, is also addressed and preliminary results obtained for a couple of events, discussed. The study cases here presented show the benefits of such a technique especially when different observational conditions (time/season of pass, atmospheric moisture content, solar illumination, satellite angles of view, etc.) are considered, making such a method globally applicable. The future prospects, also in terms of possible operational scenarios, coming from the implementation of such an approach on the new generation of satellite sensors (such as SEVIRI aboard Meteosat Second Generation) are also discussed. [Termes IGN] volcanRésumé : (Auteur) Le volcan indonésien Papandayan est entré en éruption en novembre 2002, éjectant plus d'un million de mètres cubes de cendres volcaniques. Malgré la faible magnitude de l'éruption, les pertes directes ont été considérables (1,5 M US$) et l'ensemble du bassin versant a été bouleversé par plusieurs processus morphodynamiques qui se sont succédés dans le temps et dans l'espace. [Termes IGN] volcanRésumé : (Auteur) A study of the active Mount Cameroon volcano, located south west along the Cameroon Volcanic Line, was carried out during the 1999 volcanic eruption, using Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM) imagery. It investigated geologic deformations expressed as faults, cracks and lineaments resulting from the eruption. Various image processing techniques were tested and compared in order to detect the most effective output. Principal Component Analysis was found to be useful to determine the extent of deformations caused during the 1999 volcanic eruptions. Landsat ETM revealed the formation of faults and lineaments with proximity to eruption vents. The interpretation obtained from satellite imagery was cross checked with field and ground truthing data. This paper identifies the dimensions and orientations of the newly formed geologic features.
