[Termes IGN] voisinage (relation topologique)Résumé : (Auteur) This paper describes features of a language approach for map algebra based on the use of algebraic expressions that satisfy a concise formalism. To be consistent with formal approaches such as geoalgebra and image algebra, the proposed algebraic expressions are suitable not only for the usual modeling of layers but also to describe variable neighborhoods and zones. As a compromise between language and implementation issues we present an implementation strategy based on the theory of automata. The result is an efficient way of implementing map algebra that simplifies its use on environmental and dynamic models without going too far from its well-known paradigm. [Termes IGN] voisinage (relation topologique)Résumé : (Auteur) Recent technical advances in remote sensing data capture and spatial resolution lead to a widening gap between increasing data availability on the one hand and insufficient methodology for semi-automated image data processing and interpretation on the other hand. At the interface of GIS and remote sensing, object-based image analysis methodologies are one possible approach to close this gap. With this, methods from either side are integrated to use both the capabilities of information extraction from image data and the power to perform spatial analysis on derived polygon data. However, dealing with image objects from various sources and in different scales implies combining data with inconsistent boundaries. A landscape interpretation support tool (LIST) is introduced which seeks to investigate and quantify spatial relationships among image objects stemming from different sources by using the concept of spatial coincidence. Moreover, considering different categories of object fate, LIST enables a change categorization for each polygon of a time series of classifications. The application of LIST is illustrated by two case-studies, using Landsat TM and ETM as well as CIR aerial photographs: the first showing how the tool is used to perform object quantification and change analysis; the latter demonstrating how superior aggregation capabilities of the human brain can be combined with the fine spatial segmentation and classification. Possible fields of application are identified and limitations of the approach are discussed. [Termes IGN] voisinage (relation topologique)Résumé : (Auteur) We study the continuous evaluation of spatial join queries and extensions thereof, defined by interesting combinations of sensor readings (events) that co-occur in a spatial neighborhood. An example of such a pattern is “a high temperature reading in the vicinity of at least four high-pressure readings”. We devise protocols for ‘in-network’ evaluation of this class of queries, aiming at the minimization of power consumption. In addition, we develop cost models that suggest the appropriateness of each protocol, based on various factors, including selectivity of query elements, energy requirements for sensing, and network topology. Finally, we experimentally compare the effectiveness of the proposed solutions on an experimental platform that emulates real sensor networks. [Termes IGN] voisinage (relation topologique)Résumé : (Auteur) The Fuzzy Kappa statistic expresses the agreement between two categorical raster maps. The statistic goes beyond cell-by-cell comparison and gives partial credit to cells based on the categories found in the neighborhood. When matching categories are found at shorter distances the agreement is higher. Like the well-established Kappa statistic the Fuzzy Kappa statistic expresses the mean agreement relative to the expected agreement. The model underlying the expected agreement assumes absence of spatial autocorrelation in both compared maps. In reality however, spatial autocorrelation does lower the expected agreement as matching categories become less likely to be found close-by. Since most maps have some degree of spatial autocorrelation, the calculated expected agreement is generally higher than the true expected agreement. This leads to counterintuitive results when maps that appear to have considerable agreement obtain negative Fuzzy Kappa values. Furthermore, the Fuzzy Kappa may be biased, as it systematically attributes lower agreement to maps with stronger spatial autocorrelation. This paper proposes an improved Fuzzy Kappa statistic that is based on the same local agreement and has the same attractive properties as the original Fuzzy Kappa. The novelty is that the new statistic accounts for spatial autocorrelation, such that the expected Fuzzy Kappa for maps that are not cross-correlated is equal to zero. The improved statistic is applied on two cases to demonstrate its properties.
