[Termes IGN] voisinage (relation topologique)Résumé : (Auteur) This paper explores the necessity of using spatial-temporal specific neighbourhood rules for simulation of urban dynamics at a regional level with the help of a Cellular Automata (CA) land-use model (Environment Explorer). Moreover, it explores a method for formulating these spatial-temporal specific neighbourhood rules. Therein, spatial metrics originating from the field of landscape ecology prove to be very useful, in particular the so-called enrichment factor. Analysis of historical data with the help of these spatial metrics revealed evidence of substantial differences in land-use developments between time periods and regions, for example, differences that should be incorporated in land-use models if applied on a more detailed regional scale. In a case study, micro-scale land-use data incorporated in a CA-model were used to analyse and simulate the urban morphological changes over two time periods in four urban regions in the Netherlands. In this study, regional and time-specific neighbourhood rules performed significantly better than a set of generic neighbourhood rules. In contrast, within current practice, most CA land-use modelling makes use of only one uniform set of neighbourhood rules for performing both large area and regional scale land-use simulations. This study questions this common practice and puts it into perspective. Moreover, it indicates some restrictions in the proposed regionalization of the neighbourhood rules; one which is particularly noteworthy is its time-specific dependency of local developments and circum--stances. [Termes IGN] voisinage (relation topologique)Résumé : (Auteur) The traditional 3 X 3 cell neighbourhood used in a focal operation on a raster layer has a square shape that results in a dimensional neighbourhood of which the orientation is eventually arbitrary to the physical features represented. This paper presents an experiment using a circular neighbourhood to calculate slope gradient. Comparisons of the results from a circular neighbourhood with the results from some traditional methods show that (a) for a smooth surface, the result from a circular neighbourhood is more accurate than that from a square neighbourhood, (b) a circular neighbourhood is generally more sensitive to noise in the input DEM than a square neighbourhood, and (c) in a validation using field measurements, the circular neighbourhood performs better than the square neighbourhood when the ratio of user-specified neighbourhood size to cell size is high. [Termes IGN] voisinage (relation topologique)Résumé : (Auteur) This study introduces a change detection model based on Neighborhood Correlation Image (NCI) logic. It is based on the fact that the sail-, geographic area (e.g., a 3 x 3 pixel window) on two dates of imagery will tend to be highly correlated if little change has occurred, an uncorrelated when change occurs. Computing the piecewise correlation between two data sets provides valuable information regarding the location and numeric change value derived using contextual information within the specified neighborhood. Various neighborhood configuration (i.e., multi-level NCls) were explored in the study using high spatial resolution multispectral imagery: smaller neighborhood sizes provided some detailed change information (such as a new patios added to an existing building) at the cost of introducing some noise (such as change, shadows). Larger neighborhood sizes were useful for removing this noise but introduced some inaccurate change information (such as removing some linear feature changes). When combined with image classification using a machine learning decision tree (C5.0), classifications based on multi-level NCIs yielded superior results (e.g., using a 3-pixel circular radius neighborhood had a Kappa of 0.94), compared to the classification that did not incorporate NCIs (Kappa=0.86). [Termes IGN] voisinage (relation topologique)Résumé : (Auteur) The purpose of this paper is threefold. First, using a participatory research design, it attempts to contribute to a better understanding of the problems neighborhood groups face in accessing and using GIS-based data sources and technology, including their specific geographic information needs, their perceptions of the usefulness of GIS technology for their activities, and their special concerns about GIS. Second, it provides an alternative conception of the notion of access, arguing that access cannot be reduced to the ability to obtain data, hardware and software, but also needs to consider community groups' awareness of information sources and GIS technology, and their ability to apply the technology and information in ways that are useful for their activities. Third, comparing the different community perspectives, this paper attempts to provide explanations for similarities and differences among groups, arguing that factors and conditions at the citywide, organizational, and individual scales all shape the opportunities and constraints of neighborhood groups with respect to GIS access, application ideas, and concerns.
