[Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Since the adoption of European Union Council Directive 92/43 on the conservation of natural habitats and wild fauna and flora, some opposition has arisen among owners and managers of land affected by the directive. Some studies have indicated that some of this opposition has found expression in subsequent arson fires in these areas. This article analyses the occurrence of arson fires in the SACs (Special Areas of Conservation) included in the European ecological network, Natura 2000, in Galicia (Spain), more specifically in the montes vecinales en mano común (MVMCs), which are privately owned collective lands. We tested whether the declaration of SACs had a statistical impact on the forest fire regime in the period 1999–2014. The analyses focused on the sub-periods of 1999–2004 and 2005–2014, i.e., before and after the approval of the list of sites of community importance in the study area in December 2004. The results obtained show that, after the declaration of protection, there was a statistically significant increase in the area burnt by fire in these areas, mainly on private estates. We also found that the percentage of arson fires after 2004 was higher in SACs than in other territorial units. We found that the percentage of arson fires was reduced less in SACs than in other territorial units. Furthermore, we found that the area burnt per fire after 2004 in SACs was almost double that in the MVMC-SACs (12.04 ha versus 6.64 ha), so it can be concluded that the conservationist policies of the Natura 2000 network in Galicia have not had a positive effect on the forest fire regime. [Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (auteur) Site index (SI) is a common measure of forest site productivity, serving as a valuable baseline for forest management. The main objective of this study was to develop a SI model for Pinus pinaster Ait. in north-west Spain by combining bi–temporal, low–density airborne laser scanning (ALS) data (acquired in the periods 2009–2011 and 2015–2017) with climatic, edaphic and physiographical data. Site productivity, assessed by site quality curves, was modelled using an age-independent difference equation method based on ALS metrics and environmental variables. For the model development process, we used data from 156 sample plots in pure and even-aged P. pinaster stands distributed throughout Galicia (NW Spain) and measured in the Spanish National Forest Inventory (SNFI). The generalized algebraic difference approach (GADA) formulation was tested by using two different base equations for modelling the dominant height growth (ΔH) from ALS variables. The GADA formulation derived from the Bertalanffy’s base model produced the best estimates of dominant height (H) for P. pinaster stands in Galicia. Use of the proposed model to estimate ΔH for a new pine stand requires two ALS data sets for estimating site-specific (local) parameters. To enable use of the model when such information is not available, the relationship between the values of the site-specific parameter and environmental variables was described using Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (MARS). Use of the MARS equation enabled us to develop spatially-explicit predictive maps of the site-specific parameter values, which can be used together with the GADA model to derive ΔH curves and SI estimates for P. pinaster stands in the whole study region. [Termes IGN] vitesseRésumé : (Auteur) This article discusses the integration of two models, namely, the Physical Forest Fire Spread (PhFFS) and the High Definition Wind Model (HDWM), into a Geographical Information System-based interface. The resulting tool automates data acquisition, preprocesses spatial data, launches the aforementioned models and displays the corresponding results in a unique environment. Our implementation uses the Python language and Esri’s ArcPy library to extend the functionality of ArcMap 10.4. The PhFFS is a simplified 2D physical wildland fire spread model based on conservation equations, with convection and radiation as heat transfer mechanisms. It also includes some 3D effects. The HDWM arises from an asymptotic approximation of the Navier–Stokes equations, and provides a 3D wind velocity field in an air layer above the terrain surface. Both models can be run in standalone or coupled mode. Finally, the simulation of a real fire in Galicia (Spain) confirms that the tool developed is efficient and fully operational. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (auteur) There is an increasing demand for tools that support land use planning processes, particularly the design of zoning maps, which is one of the most complex tasks in the field. In this task, different land use categories need to be allocated according to multiple criteria. The problem can be formalized in terms of a multiobjective problem. This paper generalizes and complements a previous work on this topic. It presents an algorithm based on a simulated annealing heuristic that optimizes the delimitation of land use categories on a cadastral parcel map according to suitability and compactness criteria. The relative importance of both criteria can be adapted to any particular case. Despite its high computational cost, the use of plot polygons was decided because it is realistic in terms of technical application and land use laws. Due to the computational costs of our proposal, parallel implementations are required, and several approaches for shared memory systems such as multicores are analysed in this paper. Results on a real case study conducted in the Spanish municipality of Guitiriz show that the parallel algorithm based on simulated annealing is a feasible method to design alternative zoning maps. Comparisons with results from experts are reported, and they show a high similarity. Results from our strategy outperform those by experts in terms of suitability and compactness. The parallel version of the code produces good results in terms of speed-up, which is crucial for taking advantage of the architecture of current multicore processors. [Termes IGN] toponymeRésumé : (auteur) We explore the use of toponyms as an information source of land use changes in heathland landscapes of Galicia, an Atlantic region of northwest Spain. Heathlands are prized for their condition of remarkable landscapes, biodiversity reservoirs and cultural heritage areas. A strong decline of heathland cover has taken place in Atlantic Europe during the last centuries, as land use changes toward more productive systems. Galicia retains a high proportion of heathland cover, but there is a trend of land use transformation to forest plantations and improved pastures. Place names rooted with vernacular names of heathers (Erica, Calluna and Daboecia genera, Ericaceae) were recorded in a geo-referenced database. We applied spatial statistics to account for correlation between heath toponym density and present-day heathland distribution. We did not find such correlation, but differences were found for altitudinal ranks, suggesting a wider habitat loss at lowlands than at mountain areas. We discuss the possibilities of a systematic use of toponymic databases in historical landscape reconstruction.
