A rapidly changing world with seemingly growing uncertainty needs a modern approach to this classic methodology. The book treats discrete, as well as continuous problems, all illustrated by relevant real world examples. The book presents a comprehensive outline of SDP from its roots during World War II until today. Much of recent research are covered, as well as parts of the authors’ own original research. Algorithms and computer techniques are added when needed. The book may serve as a supplementary text book on SDP (preferably at the graduate level) given adequate added background material. Note de contenu : 1- Introduction
2- SDP – basic concepts
3- SDP - Benefits
4- SDP - difficulties
5- Infinite horizon problems

[Termes IGN] traitement d'imageRésumé : (auteur) The canopy density model (CDM), a new product interpolated from airborne laser scanner (ALS) data and dedicated to forest structure characterization is presented. It exploits both the multiecho capability of the ALS and a nonparametric density estimation technique called kernel density estimators (KDEs). The CDM is used to delineate the outmost perimeter of vegetation features and to compute forest crown cover (CrCO). Contrary to other works that focus on single-layer forest canopies, CrCo is derived here for each layer, namely, the overstory, the understory, and ground vegetation. The root-mean-square error of prediction determined by using field data acquired over 44 forest stands in a forest in Portugal allows the testing of the reliability of the method: It ranges from 6.21% (overstory) to 13.76% (ground vegetation). In addition, we investigate the ability of the CDM to map the CrCo for individual trees. Finally, two existing methods have been applied to our study site in order to assess improvements, advantages, and drawbacks of our approach. [Termes IGN] vitesseRésumé : (auteur) A 1.5-μm all-fiber coherent Doppler lidar system for wind sensing was developed and characterized. The system design and implementation is presented. The system employs a 20-kHz pulse repetition rate transmitter and samples return signals at 400 MHz. A field-programmable gate array is programmed to generate and accumulate real-time periodograms representing average power spectra of the Doppler shifted echo from a series of more than 60 range gates, where each range gate is 48 m. The accumulated periodograms are streamed to a host computer for subsequent processing to yield the line-of-sight wind velocity. Wind velocity estimates with a precision value of 0.08 m/s can be made under nominal aerosol loading and nominal atmospheric turbulence conditions for ranges up to 3 km. Wind velocities and aerosol profiles are obtained while scanning the pointing direction of the lidar, thus producing both horizontal and vertical representations of the wind vectors.
