This paper describes the estimation of ice extinctions through the modeling of polarimetric interferometric SAR (Pol-InSAR) coherences as a combination of a surface contribution (from the snow-firn interface and wind-induced sastrugi features) and a volume response. Ground-to-volume scattering ratios derived from a novel polarimetric decomposition are used in conjunction with Pol-InSAR coherence magnitudes to invert the extinction of the ice layer. The inversion is performed for experimental airborne Pol-InSAR data at L-band and P-band acquired by the German Aerospace Center's (DLR) E-SAR system over the Austfonna ice cap in Svalbard, Norway, as part of the 2007 IceSAR campaign. Extinction dependences on frequency and glacier facie are investigated, and validation is performed comparing ground-penetrating radar data to SAR backscatter and extinction values. Best extinction results are obtained at shallow incidence angles with small wavenumbers and for low ground-to-volume scattering ratios. For swath areas in mid range to far range, accuracies of 25% in extinction are anticipated when averaging over 100 effective looks for a four-baseline inversion constraining solutions to vertical wavenumbers of 0.01 Numéro de notice : A2013-305 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : IMAGERIE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1109/TGRS.2012.2220855 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1109/TGRS.2012.2220855 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=32443

[Termes IGN] spatial metricsRésumé : (Auteur) This article describes a methodology for allocating demographic microdata to small enumeration areas such as census tracts, in the presence of underlying ambiguities. Maximum Entropy methods impute population weights that are constrained to match a set of census tract-level summary statistics. Once allocated, the household characteristics are summarized to revise estimates of tract-level demographic summary statistics, and to derive measures of ambiguity. The revised summary statistics are compared with original tract summaries within a context of expected variation. Allocation ambiguity is quantified for each household as a function of the distribution of imputed sample weights over all census tracts, and by computed metrics of confusion and variety of allocation to any census tract. The process reported here allows differentiation of households with regard to inherent ambiguity in the allocation decision. Ambiguity assessment represents an important component that has been neglected in spatial allocation work to date but can be seen as important additional knowledge for demographers and users of small area estimates. For the majority of tested variables, the revised tract level summaries correlate highly with original tract summary statistics. In addition to assessments for individual households, it is also possible to compute average allocation ambiguity for individual tracts, and to associate this with demographic characteristics not utilized in the allocation process. [Vedettes matières IGN] BotaniqueRésumé : (auteur) Context : While historical increases in forest growth have been largely documented, investigations on historical wood density changes remain anecdotic. They suggest possible density decreases in softwoods and ring-porous hardwoods, but are lacking for diffuse-porous hardwoods.
Aims : To evaluate the historical change in mean ring density of common beech, in a regional context where a ring-porous hardwood and a softwood have been studied, and assess the additional effect of past historical increases in radial growth (+50 % over 100 years), resulting from the existence of a positive ring size–density relationship in broadleaved species.
Methods : Seventy-four trees in 28 stands were sampled in Northeastern France to accurately separate developmental stage and historical signals in ring attributes. First, the historical change in mean ring density at 1.30 m (X-ray microdensitometry) was estimated statistically, at constant developmental stage and ring width. The effect of past growth increases was then added to assess the net historical change in wood density.
Results : A progressive centennial decrease in mean ring density of −55 kg m−3 (−7.5 %) was identified (−10 % following the most recent decline). The centennial growth increase induced a maximum +25 kg m−3 increase in mean ring density, whose net variation thus remained negative (−30 kg m−3).
Conclusions : This finding of a moderate but significant decrease in wood density that exceeds the effect of the positive growth change extends earlier reports obtained on other wood patterns in a same regional context and elsewhere. Despite their origin not being understood, such decreases hence form an issue for forest carbon accounting.Numéro de notice : A2013-828 Affiliation des auteurs : LIF+Ext (2012-2019) Thématique : FORET Nature : Article DOI : 10.1007/s13595-013-0263-2 Date de publication en ligne : 21/02/2013 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1007/s13595-013-0263-2 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=83727

[Termes IGN] toitRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a generative statistical approach to automatic 3D building roof reconstruction from airborne laser scanning point clouds. In previous works, bottom-up methods, e.g., points clustering, plane detection, and contour extraction, are widely used. Due to the data artefacts caused by tree clutter, reflection from windows, water features, etc., the bottom-up reconstruction in urban areas may suffer from a number of incomplete or irregular roof parts. Manually given geometric constraints are usually needed to ensure plausible results. In this work we propose an automatic process with emphasis on top-down approaches. The input point cloud is firstly pre-segmented into subzones containing a limited number of buildings to reduce the computational complexity for large urban scenes. For the building extraction and reconstruction in the subzones we propose a pure top-down statistical scheme, in which the bottom-up efforts or additional data like building footprints are no more required. Based on a predefined primitive library we conduct a generative modeling to reconstruct roof models that fit the data. Primitives are assembled into an entire roof with given rules of combination and merging. Overlaps of primitives are allowed in the assembly. The selection of roof primitives, as well as the sampling of their parameters, is driven by a variant of Markov Chain Monte Carlo technique with specified jump mechanism. Experiments are performed on data-sets of different building types (from simple houses, high-rise buildings to combined building groups) and resolutions. The results show robustness despite the data artefacts mentioned above and plausibility in reconstruction.
