[Termes IGN] segmentation sémantiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Object-based image analysis is quickly gaining acceptance among remote sensing community, and object-based image classification methods are increasingly being used for classification of land use/cover units from high-resolution satellite images with results closer to human interpretation compared to per-pixel classifiers. The problem of nonlinear separability of classes in a feature space consisting of spectral/spatial/textural features is addressed by kernel-based nonlinear mapping of the feature vectors. This facilitates use of linear discriminant functions for classification as used in artificial neural networks (ANNs). In this paper, performance of a recently introduced kernel called cloud basis function (CBF) is investigated with some modification for classification. The CBF has demonstrated superior performance to the tune of about 4% higher classification accuracy compared to conventional radial basis function used in ANN. The results are further improved by using probabilistic relaxation labeling as a postprocessing step. This paper has potential applications in urban planning and urban studies. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) This research investigated the applicability of lidar data for estimating population at the census block level using a volumetric approach. The study area, near the urban downtown area of Denver, Colorado, was selected since it includes dense distribution of different types of residential buildings. A modified morphological building detection algorithm was proposed to extract buildings from the lidar-derived surfaces. The extraction results showed that the modified morphological building detection algorithm can effectively recover building pixels occluded by nearby trees. The extracted buildings were further refined to residential buildings using parcel data. Two approaches (i.e., area- and volume-based) to population estimation were investigated at the census block level. Four regression models (i.e., simple linear regression, multiple linear regression, regression tree using one variable, and regression tree using multiple variables) were used to identify the relationship between census population and the area or volume information of the residential buildings. The volume-based models over-whelmingly outperformed the area-based models in the study area, and the models using multiple variables yielded more accurate estimation than the single variable models. The volume-based regression tree model using multiple variables yielded the most accurate estimations: R2 = 0.89, RMSE = 21 people, and RRMSE = 26.8 percent in the calibration site; and R2 = 0.80, RMSE = 27 people, and RRMSE = 30.1 percent in the validation site. As the results show, the volumetric approach using lidar remote sensing is effective for population estimation in regions with heterogeneous housing characteristics. [Termes IGN] régression multipleRésumé : (auteur) Estimation of forest attributes using remotely sensed data has being as a new potential for continuous management of natural resources. Simple statistical models such as linear regressions are most used approach that has been used by researchers. Applying other regression types in forest attribute estimations and their spatial modeling using decision tree analysis such as regression tree may be more usefulness compare to linear regression. In a case study in the Hyrcanian forests, northern of Iran, the capability of linear and regression tree analyses were compared to estimation of stand volume, tree density and tree diversity. Stepwise multiple regression and regression tree analyses were conducted to evaluate relationships between forest characteristics as dependent and ETM + bands and vegetation indices as independent variables. Performance assessment of models was examined using RMSE and Bias on the unused validation plots. The results of analysis showed that statistical models of stand volume, tree density, species richness and reciprocal of Simpson indices using tree regression analysis had higher adjusted R2 and CE compare to linear regression models. In addition, the performance results showed that RMSE of models using tree regression were 88.7 m3/ha, 157n/ha, 1.15 and 0.61 respectively for stand volume, tree density, species richness and Simpson index, Whereas, the RMSE of obtained models using linear regression were computed about 97m3/ha, 170n/ha, 1.51 and 1.15, respectively. [Termes IGN] superposition d'imagesRésumé : (Auteur) A methodology for automated extraction of damage indication from very high spatial resolution satellite imagery is presented for the Haitian towns of Carrefour and Leogane following the January 2010 earthquake. Damaged buildings are identified by changes to their shadows between pre- and post-event data. The approach makes use of object-based image analysis concepts to extract relevant information on damage distribution. The methodology selected requires pre-and post-disaster images with similar sun angles and will only be suitable for the detection of collapsed (or partly collapsed) structures. The new methodology proved to be effective for the Carrefour area despite using satellite images of different qualities with inadequate image (co-)registration, producing positively validated results within an acceptable processing time, and was, to the best of our knowledge, the only automated damage assessment method to have delivered appropriate results to requesting relief organizations within a few days of the Haiti earthquake.
