[Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) When conducting a forest inventory, sometimes portions of plots cannot be measured due to inaccessibility. Two primary methods have been presented to account for partial nonresponse in the estimation phase: (i) use a ratio-to-size estimator or (ii) apply an adjustment factor to all plot observations in proportion to the missing area. Both approaches provide identical estimates of the population mean, but the estimates of variance differ when partial nonresponse is present. The performance of variance estimators was examined for a range of population forest area and partial nonresponse proportions in the sample. The ratio-to-size variance estimator performed unbiasedly with respect to simulation results, but the adjustment factor variance estimates were biased, with magnitude and direction dependent upon the forest area proportion and amount of partial nonresponse. The bias is relatively small when the partial nonresponse is small, which is often the case; however, the ratio-to-size method is preferred to ensure accurate variance estimation for a wide range of circumstances. [Termes IGN] volume en boisRésumé : (auteur) The accurate estimation of tree attributes is essential for sustainable forest management. Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) is a viable remote sensing technology suitable for estimating under canopy structure. However, TLS measurements generally underestimate tree height in taller trees, which leads to the underestimation of other tree attributes (e.g., stem volume). The integration of information derived from TLS and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry could potentially improve tree height estimation. This study investigated the applicability of integrating TLS and UAV photogrammetry to estimate individual tree attributes in managed coniferous forests of Japan. Diameter at breast height (DBH), tree height, and stem volume were estimated by (1) TLS data only, (2) integrating TLS and UAV data with TLS tree locations, and (3) integrating TLS and UAV data with treetop detections of the tree canopy. The TLS data only approach achieved high accuracy for DBH estimations with a root mean squared error (RMSE) of 2.36 cm (RMSE% 5.6%); however, tree height was greatly underestimated, with an RMSE of 8.87 m (28.9%) and a bias of −8.39 m. Integrating TLS and UAV photogrammetric data improved tree height estimation accuracy for both the TLS tree location (RMSE of 1.89 m and a bias of −0.46 m) and the treetop detection (RMSE of 1.77 m and a bias of 0.36 m) approaches. Integrating TLS and UAV photogrammetric data also improved the accuracy of the stem volume estimations with RMSEs of 0.21 m3 (10.8%) and 0.21 m3 (10.5%) for the TLS tree location and treetop detection approaches, respectively. Although the tree height of suppressed trees tended to be overestimated by TLS and UAV photogrammetric data integration, a good performance was obtained for dominant trees. The results of this study indicate that the integration of TLS and UAV photogrammetry is beneficial for the accurate estimation of tree attributes in coniferous forests. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Studies on urban–rural fringes, which represent regions facing various urbanization problems caused by rapid expansion, have steadily increased in recent years. However, problems persist in the quantitative delimitation of such regions. Based on the characteristics of abrupt urbanization-level changes in urban–rural fringe areas, we propose a constraint-based method in this study to detect the urban–rural fringes of cities with a spatial polycentric structure of ‘Main center–Subcenter’ based on data from multiple sources. We used the proposed approach to delimitate the fringe areas of Jiangyin and Zhangjiagang and identify their urban main center and subcenter pre-defined by their city master plans, towns, and rural hinterlands. Comparison of the identified results of different single urbanization indices, a single detection center, kernel density estimation, and a single constraint revealed that the patch density and Shannon’s diversity index of the proposed method were higher in urban–rural fringes and smaller in city centers and rural hinterlands. This suggests that the landscape of urban–rural fringes delimitated by the proposed method is more fragmented, diverse, and complicated, thereby performing better. This study is significant for future urban spatial analysis, planning, and management. [Termes IGN] tâche claireRésumé : (auteur) Volunteer-contributed geographic data (VGI) is an important source of geospatial big data that support research and applications. A major concern on VGI data quality is that the underlying observation processes are inherently biased. Detecting observation hot-spots thus helps better understand the bias. Enabled by the parallel kernel density estimation (KDE) computational tool that can run on multiple GPUs (graphics processing units), this study conducted point pattern analyses on tens of millions of iNaturalist observations to detect and visualize volunteers’ observation hot-spots across spatial scales. It was achieved by setting varying KDE bandwidths in accordance with the spatial scales at which hot-spots are to be detected. The succession of estimated density surfaces were then rendered at a sequence of map scales for visual detection of hot-spots. This study offers an effective geovisualization scheme for hierarchically detecting hot-spots in massive VGI datasets, which is useful for understanding the pattern-shaping drivers that operate at multiple spatial scales. This research exemplifies a computational tool that is supported by high-performance computing and capable of efficiently detecting and visualizing multi-scale hot-spots in geospatial big data and contributes to expanding the toolbox for geospatial big data analytics.
