[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Aim : To improve our understanding of species range limits by studying how height growth, a trait related to plant survival, varies throughout the geographic range of Fagus sylvatica L. in France.
Location : The geographic range of beech in France, representing the western area of its European distribution, within which this species exhibits range distribution limits in both plains and mountainous areas.
Methods : A generalized linear regression model was used to link beech growth performance to environmental variables using data from 819 plots of the French National Forest Inventory (IFN) database. This model was applied to predict potential growth on 97,281 IFN plots covering the geographic range of beech in France. A kriging technique was used to interpolate estimated growth potential. Finally, the performance of plot-based predictions of potential growth from the map (i.e. map quality) was evaluated against an independent data set.
Results : The beech growth performance model highlighted the major impact of climate on potential tree growth at a broad spatial scale. The relevant climatic factors were related mainly to spring cold, summer heat, and winter temperatures and rainfall. The study also revealed the predictive power of soil parameters, which explained a large proportion of the variation in potential beech growth (c. 30%). Analyses of height growth patterns near the boundary of the species range in France showed that the limit only partly coincides with the growth decline caused by climatic and soil factors. Along parts of the range limit, the predicted potential for growth was high, suggesting that in these areas the limit of the range could be explained by other factors, such as competition or constraints on reproduction.
Main conclusions : The spatial variation in the potential height growth of Fagus sylvatica can be explained by environmental factors and is partly correlated with its regional range limits. For many nations, these data are normally collected through a census. However, during the intercensal period (5-10 years), these data lose their currency and must be updated. The objective of this project was to estimate housing unit density from Landsat ETM+ imagery in the Terre Haute, IN, USA, region. Modelling was done for 1945 census blocks in the study area containing 30 972 housing units. Landtype, as represented by six cluster classes, was used as the primary surrogate for housing unit density. The percentage of each landtype within the census blocks was calculated. Other landscape metrics representing landtype patch dominance and diversity were also calculated on a per-block basis. Housing unit density within the census block was then modelled as a function of those percentages and metrics using discriminant analysis and multiple regression. The simple correlation between the observed and modelled housing unit density was 0.79. The mean residual error produced by the model was 0.37 housing units per hectare. [Termes IGN] stress hydriqueRésumé : (auteur) Water availability is one of the main factors explaining flora composition and growth in Mediterranean regions, where it may decline with climate change. Our goal was to develop a model for forest site assessment in Mediterranean environments, focusing on water availability to assess potential vegetation composition and productivity in any places, whatever their level of disturbance. We designed a statistical model, using global climatic and geographic variables, as well as detailed local topographic and edaphic variables, to compute a bioclimatic index for Mediterranean forest environments. This model was calibrated in France with a flora index from 325 old forests. The model explained 80.3% of the flora index variance. The method fills a gap in existing models, bridging scales from the region to forest sites. Beyond its theoretical aspect, it was designed to allow practical tools to be derived from it for decision-making and management, such as the assessment of climate change impact on vegetation, and of forest productivity. Its development and adaptation is possible in other Mediterranean regions, and in any region where water is one of the main limiting factors. Urban forest canopy cover and impervious surface cover were estimated from Landsat-7 ETM+ imagery using a higher resolution cover map resampled to 30 m as training and reference data. Three different band combinations (reflectance, tasseled cap, and both reflectance and tasseled cap plus thermal) were compared for their effectiveness with each of the methods. Thirty different training site number and size combinations were also tested. Support vector regression on the tasseled cap bands was found to be the best estimator for urban forest canopy cover, while Cubist performed best using the reflectance plus tasseled cap band combination when predicting impervious surface cover. More training data partitioned in many small training sites generally produces better estimation results. Furthermore, round-wood end use is important in the provincial forest management context because it is used to split the allowable annual cut among the different mill types. A method relying on linear, binomial and cumulative logit regressions is proposed to predict both decay volume and round-wood end use volume. Tree age, height and quality, as well as ecological region, stand origin and presence of Phellinus tremulae (Bond.) Bond. & Boriss. and Ceratocystis fimbriata (Ellis & Halst.) fungi are the main factors that contribute to the presence and the proportion of decayed merchantable volume. Once the net merchantable volume is estimated, its division into round-wood end use is estimated through a series of steps involving the presence of Phellinus tremulae, saw log height, stem quality and size as explanatory variables. The first step is a multinomial regression which predicts the number of end uses (pulp wood, low-grade saw logs, saw logs, low-grade veneer, and veneer) that are present in the stem. A series of logistic regressions then determines the presence of each end use, with linear regressions predicting the round-wood volume of each end use.
