[Termes IGN] régressionRésumé : (Auteur) Despite the improvements made in census procedures over recent decades, the availability of detailed population data is limited. For many applications, including environmental and health analyses, methods are therefore needed to model population distribution at the small-area level. With the development of GIS and remote sensing techniques, the ability to develop such models has greatly improved. This paper describes a GIS-based approach using remotely sensed land cover and nighttime light emissions data to model population distribution at the land parcel level across the European Union. Light emission data from the DMSP satellites were first resampled and modelled using kriging and inverse distance weighting methods to provide a 200-m resolution light emissions map. This was then matched to CORINE land cover classes across the EU. Regression methods were used to derive models of relationships between census population counts (at NUTS 5 level) and land cover area and light emissions. Models were developed at both national and EU scale, using a range of different modelling strategies. Model performance, as indicated by the regression statistics, was seen to be good, with R2 typically in the order of 0.8–0.9 and SEE ca. 4000 people. In southern countries, especially, incorporation of light emissions data was found to improve model performance considerably compared to models based only on land cover data. More detailed post hoc validation in Great Britain, using independent data on population at census tract (enumeration district and output area) and postcode level, for 1991 and 2001, showed that models gave good predictions of population at the 1 km level (R2 > 0.9), but were less reliable at resolutions below ca. 500 m. Impending enhancements in the available land cover and light emissions data are expected to improve the capability of this modelling approach in the future. [Termes IGN] superposition d'imagesRésumé : (Auteur) 3D surface matching would be an ill conditioned problem when the curvature of the object surface is either homogenous or isotropic, e.g. for plane or spherical types of objects. A reliable solution can only be achieved if supplementary information or functional constraints are introduced. In a previous paper, an algorithm for the least squares matching of overlapping 3D surfaces, which were digitized/sampled point by point using a laser scanner device, by the photogrammetric method or other techniques, was proposed [Gruen, A., and Akca, D., 2005. Least squares 3D surface and curve matching. ISPRS Journal of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing 59 (3), 151–174.]. That method estimates the transformation parameters between two or more fully 3D surfaces, minimizing the Euclidean distances instead of z-differences between the surfaces by least squares. In this paper, an extension to the basic algorithm is given, which can simultaneously match surface geometry and its attribute information, e.g. intensity, colour, temperature, etc. under a combined estimation model. Three experimental results based on terrestrial laser scanner point clouds are presented. The experiments show that the basic algorithm can solve the surface matching problem provided that the object surface has at least the minimal information. If not, the laser scanner derived intensities are used as supplementary information to find a reliable solution. The method derives its mathematical strength from the least squares image matching concept and offers a high level of flexibility for many kinds of 3D surface correspondence problem. [Termes IGN] régression logistiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Modelling and mapping of hooded warbler (Wilsonia citrina) nesting habitat in forests of southern Ontario were conducted using Ikonos and Landsat data. The study began with an analysis of skyward hemispherical photography to determine canopy characteristics associated with nest sites. It showed that nest sites had significantly less overhead canopy cover and larger maximum gap size than in non-nest areas. These findings led to the hypothesis that brightness variability in high to moderate resolution remotely sensed imagery may be greater at nest sites than in non-nest areas due to larger shadows and greater shadow variability related to these gap characteristics. This was confirmed when, in addition to some spectral band brightness variables, several image texture and spectrally unmixed fraction (shadow, bare soil) variables were found to be significantly different for nest and non-nest sites in Ikonos and Landsat imagery. These significantly different variables were used in maximum likelihood classification (MLC) and logistic regression (LR) to produce maps of potential nesting habitat. Mapping was conducted with Ikonos and Landsat in a local area where most known nest sites occur, and regionally using Landsat data for almost all of the hooded warbler range in southern Ontario. For the local area mapping using Ikonos data, a posteriori probabilities for both the MLC and LR methods showed that about 62% of the nest sites set aside for validation had been classified with high probability (p > 0.70) in the nest class. MLC mapping accuracy was 70% for the validation nest sites and 87% of validation nest sites were within 10 m of classified nesting habitat, a distance approximately equivalent to expected positional error in the data. LR accuracy was slightly lower. Nest site MLC mapping accuracy in the local area using Landsat data was 87% but the map was much coarser due to the larger pixel size. Regional mapping with Landsat imagery produced lower classification accuracy due to high errors of commission for the habitat class. This resulted from a poor spatial distribution and low number of observations of nest sites throughout the region compared to the local area, while the non-nest site data distribution was too narrow, having been defined and assessed (using standard accepted methods) as areas with no ground shrubs. If either of these problems can be ameliorated, regional mapping accuracy may improve. [Termes IGN] modèle de géopotentielRésumé : (Auteur) This paper introduces a new approach to reduce the airborne gravity data acquired by a LaCoste & Romberg (L&R) air/sea gravimeter, or other similar gravimeters. The acceleration exerted on the gravimeter is the sum of gravity and the vertical and Eötvös accelerations of the aircraft. The L&R gravimeter outputs are: (1) the beam position, (2) the spring tension and (3) the cross coupling. Vertical and Eötvös accelerations are computed from GPS-derived aircraft positions. However, the vertical perturbing acceleration sensed by the gravimeter is not the same as the one sensed by the aircraft (via GPS). A determination of the aircraft-to-sensor transfer function is necessary. The second-order differential equation of the motion of the gravimeter’s beam mixes all the input and output parameters of the gravimeter. Conventionally, low-pass filtering in the frequency domain is used to extract the gravity signal, the filter being applied to each flight-line individually. By transforming the differential equation into an integral equation and by introducing related covariance matrices, we develop a new filtering method based on a least-squares approach that is able to take into account, in one stage, the data corresponding to all flight-lines. The a posteriori covariance matrix of the estimated gravity signal is an internal criterion of the precision of the method. As an example, we estimate the gravity values along the flight-lines from an airborne gravity survey over the Alps and introduce an a priori covariance matrix of the gravity disturbances from a global geopotential model. This matrix is used to regularize the ill-posed Fredholm integral equation introduced in this paper. [Termes IGN] régressionRésumé : (Auteur) The retrieval of biophysical variables using canopy reflectance models is hindered by the fact that the inverse problem is ill posed. This is due to the measurement, model errors and the inadequacy between the model and reality, which produces similar reflectances for the different combination of the input parameters into the radiative transfer model. This leads to unstable and often inaccurate inversion results. The ill-posed nature of the inverse problem requires some regularization. Regularization means that one tries to consider only those solutions that are in the proximity of the true value. In order to regularize the model inversion, we propose kernel-based regularization by support vector machines regression (SVR) method. The formulation of the SVR contains meta-parameters C (regularization) and ?-insensitive loss. The SVR generalization performance (estimation accuracy) depends on these two parameters and the kernel parameters. Often the meta-parameters are selected using prior knowledge and/or user expertise. In this paper we adopt methods for the estimation of the meta-parameters from the input data itself instead of relying on any prior information. This paper is focused on the retrieval of leaf area index (LAI) from multiangle imaging spectroradiometer (MISR) data. The proposed methodology was implemented by inverting a 1D canopy reflectance model (PROSAIL) using SVR over MISR data. The results were validated against the LAI retrievals at the Alpilles EOS validation core site. An RMSE of 0.64 was obtained using both near-infrared (NIR) in conjunction with the red band and an RMSE of 0.50 using only the NIR band.
