[Termes IGN] surveillance géologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The St. Austell granite of Cornwall, UK contains internationally important deposits of kaolin (china clay), the formation of which result from the alteration of a composite pluton of mineralogically and texturally different primary granite units. To assess the applicability of hyperspectral remote sensing in the St. Austell china clay region, one line of airborne HyMap® hyperspectral data was acquired. These data were processed to correct for atmospheric and illumination effects by calibration from radiance to reflectance data, so that mineral abundance maps could be produced. Minerals associated with the primary granite and its subsequent kaolinisation were identified by image processing and used as mapping endmembers. These minerals include kaolinite, kaolinite with smectite, montmorillonite, muscovite, lepidolite (a lithium mica) and topaz.
Hyperspectral data analysis allowed for the identification of the different primary granite units. The spectrally observed compositional differences of the biotite and topaz granite units of the region allowed for fingerprinting of the source of mined waste material as originating from specific pits. The majority of waste tips in the region originate from the nearest china clay workings. However, waste material used in the construction of a mica dam and also as backfill in a disused pit is successfully identified to have been transported across a mapped granite boundary for storage. The effect of mining and mineral processing on the abundance and spatial distribution of minerals in the region is also evident. Wastetips are classified as containing the greatest abundance of mica. This distribution results from the separation of kaolinite during the mineral processing stages. Kaolinite in lower abundance, however, is also identified within these waste areas and is the result of a less than 100% recovery by mining and processing.

A new method is then presented, which is providing elements for this vicarious calibration, starting from sun-photometer ground measurements of sky radiances and degree of polarisation, and based on a neural network approach for the inversion of these measurements in terms of aerosol optical properties. [Termes IGN] température de luminanceRésumé : (Auteur) In the framework of the preparation of the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission, several field experiments are required so as to address specific modeling issues. The goal is to improve current models and to test retrieval algorithms. However, adequate ground instrumentation is scarce and not readily available "off the shelf": In this context, a high-accuracy L-band radiometer was required for a specific long-term campaign for the preparation of the SMOS mission. For this purpose, a dual-polarized radiometer was designed and built to check algorithms for surface soil moisture retrieval from multiangular dual-polarized brightness temperatures. This radiometer has been tested in the field for 20 months and is operational since end of January 2003. The aim of this paper is to give details of the system architecture, calibration procedures, together with the performances obtained and some preliminary results. [Termes IGN] modèle de transfert radiatifRésumé : (Auteur) The low-cost Multispectral Airborne Video System (MAVS), developed using off-the-shelf components, is predominantly being used for agricultural and environmental monitoring applications in Australia. In order to guarantee quality of operational imagery regular radiometric calibration checks, under both preflight and in-flight environments, are a necessity. While preflight calibration is conducted in the field with relative ease, to conduct in-flight calibration checks during operational missions is difficult, especially when onboard calibration instrumentation is not available. The calibration of MAVS imagery in flight requires a radiative transfer code such as the 6S to simulate the radiation signal at the operational altitude. A comparison of the simulated in-flight calibration equation with the corresponding preflight calibration equation showed a statistically significant agreement for every MAVS band, demonstrating the stability of response of the instrument in the air. This MAVS response stability indicates a potential for calibrating operational airborne imagery using preflight calibration equations. A few simulated in-flight calibration checks, in addition to regular preflight calibrations, could still be carried out during the flight season to verify system radiometric response in the air.
