[Termes IGN] télémétrie laserRésumé : (auteur) This study proposes a new geometric calibration method for satellite laser altimeters based on waveform matching to solve the problems of poor initial pointing accuracy and a lack of control data. This non-real-time method obtains ground control points without a fixed calibration field. First, a large area with stepped surfaces is chosen from the laser altimetry coverage. Then, the laser echo waveforms are simulated using digital surface model (DSM) data of the stepped features. The real echo waveform attempts to match the simulated echo waveforms through a waveform matching model using a global constraint. Next, the control points of the laser altimeter are obtained through waveform matching. Finally, a geometric calibration model for laser altimeters is proposed to compensate for laser pointing and ranging errors. Two experiments were conducted to verify the calibration method using ICESat/GLAS data and airborne large-footprint laser data. Experimental results confirm that the method is feasible and results in an improvement in the elevation accuracy for the airborne altimeter from 2 to 0.5 m. [Termes IGN] Ransac (algorithme)Résumé : (auteur) Fisheye cameras are widely used in visual localization due to the advantage of the wide field of view. However, the severe distortion in fisheye images lead to feature matching difficulties. This paper proposes an IMU-assisted fisheye image matching method called spherically optimized random sample consensus (So-RANSAC). We converted the putative correspondences into fisheye spherical coordinates and then used an inertial measurement unit (IMU) to provide relative rotation angles to assist fisheye image epipolar constraints and improve the accuracy of pose estimation and mismatch removal. To verify the performance of So-RANSAC, experiments were performed on fisheye images of urban drainage pipes and public data sets. The experimental results showed that So-RANSAC can effectively improve the mismatch removal accuracy, and its performance was superior to the commonly used fisheye image matching methods in various experimental scenarios. [Termes IGN] structure-from-motionRésumé : (auteur) Digital terrain model (DTM) generation is essential to recreating terrain morphology once the external elements are removed. Traditional survey methods are still used to collect accurate geographic data on the land surface. Given the emergence of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with low-cost digital cameras and better photogrammetric methods for digital mapping, efficient approaches are necessary to allow rapid land surveys with high accuracy. This paper provides a review, complemented with the authors’ experience, regarding the UAV photogrammetric process and field survey parameters for DTM generation using popular commercial photogrammetric software to process images obtained with fixed-wing or multicopter UAVs. We analyzed the quality and accuracy of the DTMs based on four categories: (i) the UAV system (UAV platforms and camera); (ii) flight planning and image acquisition (flight altitude, image overlap, UAV speed, orientation of the flight line, camera configuration, and georeferencing); (iii) photogrammetric DTM generation (software, image alignment, dense point cloud generation, and ground filtering); (iv) geomorphology and land use/cover. For flat terrain, UAV photogrammetry provided a horizontal root mean square error (RMSE) between 1 to 3 × the ground sample distance (GSD) and a vertical RMSE between 1 to 4.5 × GSD, and, for complex topography, a horizontal RMSE between 1 to 7 × GSD and a vertical RMSE between 1.5 to 5 × GSD. Finally, we stress that UAV photogrammetry can provide DTMs with high accuracy when the photogrammetric process variables are optimized. [Termes IGN] rapport signal sur bruitRésumé : (Auteur) Sentinel-1 (S1) extra-wide (EW) swath data in cross-polarization (horizontal–vertical, HV or vertical–horizontal, VH) are strongly affected by the scalloping effect and thermal noise, particularly over areas with weak backscattered signals, such as sea surfaces. Although noise vectors in both the azimuth and range directions are provided in the standard S1 EW data for subtraction, the residual thermal noise still significantly affects sea ice detection by the EW data. In this article, we improve the denoising method developed in previous studies to remove the additive noise for the S1 EW data in cross-polarization. Furthermore, we propose a new method for eliminating the residual noise (i.e., multiplicative noise) at the subswath boundaries of the EW data, which cannot be well processed by simply subtracting the reconstructed 2-D noise field. The proposed method of removing both the additive and multiplicative noise was applied to EW HV-polarized images processed using different Instrument Processing Facility (IPF) versions. The results suggest that the proposed algorithm significantly improves the quality of EW HV-polarized images under various sea ice conditions and sea states in the marginal ice zone (MIZ) of the Arctic. This is of great support for the utilization of cross-polarization synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images in wide swaths for intensive sea ice monitoring in polar regions. [Termes IGN] structure-from-motionRésumé : (auteur) Knowledge of offset vectors from vessel mounted sonars, to systems such as Inertial Measurement Units and Global Navigation Satellite Systems is crucial for accurate ocean mapping applications. Traditional survey methods, such as employing laser scanners or total stations, are used to determine professional vessel offset distances reliably. However, for vessels of opportunity that are collecting volunteer bathymetric data, it is beneficial to consider survey methods that may be less time consuming, less expensive, or which do not involve bringing the vessel into a dry dock. Thus, this article explores two alternative methods that meet this criterion for horizontally calibrating vessels. Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UASs) were used to horizontally calibrate a vessel with both Structure from Motion photogrammetry and aerial lidar while the vessel was moored to a floating dock. Estimates of the horizontal deviations from ground truth, were obtained by comparing the horizontal distances between targets on a vessel, acquired by the UAS methods, to multiple ground truth sources: a survey-grade terrestrial laser scan and fiberglass tape measurements. The investigated methods were able to achieve horizontal deviations on the order of centimeters with the use of Ground Control Points.
