After launch, a systematic postlaunch calibration and validation of the instrument performance was conducted with on-orbit data. A brief report of the initial assessment of the instrument performance is presented in this paper. Scan-by-scan examination of the radiometric calibration counts is employed to confirm normal functioning of the instrument and to detect any anomalous events, such as lunar contamination in the space radiometric counts, which are accurately detected, flagged, and corrected using a physical model of lunar surface temperature and antenna patterns derived from on-orbit data. The long-term trends of the space and warm calibration counts, channel gains, and housekeeping temperature sensors are monitored. Temperature sensitivity (or the noise-equivalent $Delta hbox{T}$) values for individual channels are also monitored since launch. The long-term temporal trends of the monthly averages and angular distributions of brightness temperature measurements from the NOAA-16 and -18 over the Amazon rain forest region are obtained and compared to demonstrate that the Amazon rain forest can be used as a hot reference calibration target. The establishment of a land calibration target is an important addition to the few tools available to date for calibration and validation of spaceborne microwave radiometers. [Termes IGN] spectromètre imageurRésumé : (Auteur) This paper will describe the spectral calibration activities conducted during the MERIS commissioning phase and during operation since orbit 12000. MERIS is a medium resolution (300-1200m) push-broom imaging spectrometer covering the spectral domain 390-1040nm with 15 bands, programmable in position and width down to steps of 1.25nm. The onboard spectral calibration hardware is based on the use of an Erbium doped-diffuser panel presenting well-defined absorption peaks. In the spectral calibration mode, MERIS is configured with narrow bands centred on an Erbium absorption feature (two are used). The first orbit, the instrument is calibrated by viewing the "white" radiometric diffuser plate and the following orbit the "pink" Erbium diffuser plate is deployed. This method allows each of the MERIS detectors involved to be characterized in wavelength. The Fraunhofer absorption lines were used to complement these results by providing additional measurements in the violet and near infrared part of the spectrum. For this method, MERIS was configured both for Earth and diffuser observations and acquired data for only a limited number of orbits. This procedure was repeated for different band settings covering a number of Fraunhofer absorption lines. Finally, using Oxygen (O2A) absorption Earth observation data, two different approaches were developed, one based on the retrieval of surface pressure and one based on the shape of the O2A absorption band. Both methods were developed for clear sky land observations, but their performances are improved over bright land targets. Both methods agree to within an accuracy of 0.02 nm. The results from the different methods are analyzed in order to propose a spectral model for the MERIS instrument. Preliminary results of the spectral variation with time are reported. Except camera 4, the instrument is quite stable with time. Camera 4 needs further investigations to better understand its behaviour. Except for the use of the MERIS oxygen band, the spectral characterization of the other MERIS bands is achieved within the nominal accuracy (1 nm). [Termes IGN] test de performanceRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper the calibration of Optech ALTM 3100 laser scanner intensity is reported using airborne experiments and known brightness targets. The Finnish Geodetic Institute has had a permanent photogrammetric test field in Sjokulla Kirkkonummi since 1994. This test field contains permanent and transportable test targets for radiometric calibration, permanent ground control points for small, medium and large-scale geometric calibration and also test bar targets for spatial analysis of analogue and digital aerial cameras. Since 2000 LiDAR testing has also been carried out, the latest being Optech ALTM 3100 campaign in 12-14 July 2005. Eight portable brightness targets with nominal reflectance of 5 %, 10 %, 20 %, 25 %, 30 %, 45 %, 50 % and 70 % were in use for LiDAR testing. Flying heights were about 200, 1000 and 3000 m above ground level. Intensity values need to be corrected with respect to range, incidence angle (both BRDF and range correction), atmospheric transmittance, attenuation using dark object addition and transmitted power (because difference in PRF will lead to different transmitter power values). After these corrections, the intensity values were directly relative to target reflectance. Flight heights of 200 m and 1000 m are suitable for intensity calibration using artificial test targets due to the practical aspects of the calibration (size of the calibrator). With the 3000 m altitude signals with reflectance of less or equal of 10% could not be recorded most probably due to insufficient signal-to-noise ratio. Thus, the test target reflectance should exceed 10% to give a reliable distance measurement from 3000 m altitude. [Termes IGN] Multi-Angle Imaging SpectroradiometerRésumé : (Auteur) This paper focuses on the validation aspect of the geometric calibration approach as implemented for the Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR), a part of the payload for NASA's Terra spacecraft. The MISR instrument, launched in December 1999, continuously acquires a systematic, global, multi-angle imagery in reflected sunlight in order to support and improve studies of-Earth's ecology and climate. Moderate-resolution data acquired with a unique configuration of nine fixed pushbroom cameras need to be autonomously georectified prior to use in subsequent scientific retrievals. A robust data production algorithm is based on in-flight generated calibration datasets produced at the beginning of the mission and operationally validated in the first two years. However, in order to maintain required subpixel co-registration accuracies, globally and throughout the life of the mission, data production operations are complemented with a quality monitoring system. This system has been critical in: 1) resolving impact issues that georectification quality may have on subsequent retrievals, 2) providing bases for decisions regarding updates of the calibration datasets and production algorithm, and 3) evaluating and summarizing overall pointing stability and georectification performance. With the series of quality investigations focusing on the georectification requirements, it was determined that the pointing stability of one of the cameras is not as good as the other eight cameras. As a result, the data production algorithm has been updated to assure uniform georectification and co-registration performance prior to processing a final data collection for the entire life of the mission. Presented in this paper will be: an overview of the calibration approach and related quality monitoring system, operational results prior to and after the final implementation and the global summaries on geospatial data accuracies.
