It is based on discrete visualization of flows with small, reflecting, neutrally buoyant tracer particles and a stereoscopic recording of image sequences of the particles marking the flow. This thesis describes and analyzes an implementation of a fully automatic 3D-PTV based on solid state image sensors and methods of digital photogrammetry. After an overview on competing methods of flow measurement the hardware configuration of a 3D-PTV will be shown. An implementation at ETH Zurich, which mainly consists of off-the-shelf hardware components will be presented and some state-of-the-art components capable of improving the system will be discussed. Central points of the work is an exact modelling of the geometry of the experiment and the recording system, algorithmic aspects of image processing and establishment of stereoscopic correspondences in dense, truly threedimensional target fields and the calibration of the system. The processing of the image sequences with the aim of deriving particle trajectories begins with the determination of particle image coordinates by a modified thresholding operator in highpassfiltered images. Due to lack of features allowing a reliable distinction of particles the establishment of stereoscopic correspondences can only be based on the geometric criterium of the epipolar line. The large number of particles imaged (typically 1000 - 2000) will often lead to ambiguities, which cannot be solved by a system based on only two cameras. Therefore different arrangements and algorithms based on three or more cameras are being discussed, which are able to reduce the probability of the occurence of ambiguities drastically by exploiting the geometric constraint of a third camera. The geometric modelling has to consider the multimedia environment causing a twice broken beam from any particle in water to the sensor, which is accounted for by a multimedia module implemented into the collinearity condition; optical effects of the multimedia environment necessitate a calibration of the complete system in situ under the conditions of the experiment. The system described in the thesis is capable of determining velocity fields in flows with a spatial resolution of up to 1000 simultaneous velocity vectors at a temporal resolution of 25 vector fields per second and almost arbitrary sequence length completely automatically after an initialization by an operator. Classic aerial photogrammetry relies on the projective transformation of known object space coordinates into the photo coordinate system, enforcing the condition of collinearity, in order to solve for the six unknown parameters of exterior orientation for each photograph. Errors due to the imperfect determination of the system calibration, particularly those errors related to the interior orientation elements of the camera lens system, propagate into the exterior orientation parameters due to the high correlation between the orientation parameters. Three of the exterior orientation parameters are the object space coordinates of the camera exposure station.
In the future, the position of the exposure station will be determined by very accurate navigation systems such as the NAVSTAR Global Positioning System (GPS). Direct measurement of the exposure station position has the potential of minimizing or totally eliminating the requirement for signalized control in the object space. The positions of object space points can be extrapolated from their image coordinates through the known position of the exposure station. The extrapolation accuracy will be highly dependent on the precise calibration of the entire airborne system under normal operating conditions.
Kinematic GPS techniques provide the means to accurately position the airborne system over a dense set of signalized geodetic control points so that the entire airborne can be calibrated in the environment which it normally operates. This research instrumented the calibration technique, analyzed obvious sources of systematic error, and demonstrated the technique by calibrating an airborne system. The lens system, as well as aircraft induced systematic errors, were modeled and verified. Certain systematic errors would not otherwise have been determined by normal laboratory calibrations.
The airborne calibration improved the overall performance of the system. Relative positional accuracies of 5 cm were achieved for targeted object space points. These accuracies were achieved from photography obtained at an altitude of 2100 m above the ground at speeds in excess of 80 meters per second without any knowledge of the object space coordinates.Numéro de notice : 12094 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : IMAGERIE Nature : Thèse étrangère Note de thèse : PhD thesis : Ohio State University : 1991 DOI : sans Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=54524 Réservation
