This paper discusses two current approaches to ground-based cloud sensing: the prototype instrument used at ETH/MeteoSwiss within Cloudmap and Cloudmap2 for stereoscopy tests, and a Daylight Visible/NIR Whole Sky Imager (WSI) system developed and fielded by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO). The article includes descriptions of the radiometric and geometric calibration methods. Cloud amount, cloud-base height and cloud-base motion results from two ETH/MeteoSwiss measurement campaigns and from the operational WSI use at the German Weather Service (DWD) are shown. Finally, a case study with coincident satellite and ground data illustrates that ground-based digital imager systems are an interesting technique to validate satellite-based cloud-top heights and cloud-top motion winds of vertically thin clouds. [Termes IGN] précision géométrique (imagerie)Résumé : (Auteur) Test field system calibration will be a fundamental part of the future photogrammetric production line. Accurate calibration and performance evaluations are necessary for fully assessing the stability and accuracy of digital sensing techniques. In this paper, a method of comprehensive geometric calibration in a test field has been developed and empirically tested using eight image blocks collected with three UltraCamD digital large format photogrammetric cameras. Permanent photogrammetric test fields form the basis of the method. Important components of the method are determination of system parameters, evaluation of systematic errors, and assessment of geometric accuracy. The results showed that UltraCamD images contained systematic deformations that could not be modeled with single lens additional parameter models. Good point determination accuracy was obtained despite the systematic errors ; the typical accuracy was 2–3 um in image space in the horizontal coordinates and 0.05–0.09 of the object distance in height. One of the cameras had significantly poorer performance. In the worst cases, the horizontal accuracy was 5 um in image space and the height accuracy was 0.18 of the object distance. The analog cameras gave better results than the UltraCamD, but the development of appropriate mathematical models for UltraCamD as well as improvements in digital sensors may change the situation in the near future. [Termes IGN] test de performanceRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper the calibration of Optech ALTM 3100 laser scanner intensity is reported using airborne experiments and known brightness targets. The Finnish Geodetic Institute has had a permanent photogrammetric test field in Sjokulla Kirkkonummi since 1994. This test field contains permanent and transportable test targets for radiometric calibration, permanent ground control points for small, medium and large-scale geometric calibration and also test bar targets for spatial analysis of analogue and digital aerial cameras. Since 2000 LiDAR testing has also been carried out, the latest being Optech ALTM 3100 campaign in 12-14 July 2005. Eight portable brightness targets with nominal reflectance of 5 %, 10 %, 20 %, 25 %, 30 %, 45 %, 50 % and 70 % were in use for LiDAR testing. Flying heights were about 200, 1000 and 3000 m above ground level. Intensity values need to be corrected with respect to range, incidence angle (both BRDF and range correction), atmospheric transmittance, attenuation using dark object addition and transmitted power (because difference in PRF will lead to different transmitter power values). After these corrections, the intensity values were directly relative to target reflectance. Flight heights of 200 m and 1000 m are suitable for intensity calibration using artificial test targets due to the practical aspects of the calibration (size of the calibrator). With the 3000 m altitude signals with reflectance of less or equal of 10% could not be recorded most probably due to insufficient signal-to-noise ratio. Thus, the test target reflectance should exceed 10% to give a reliable distance measurement from 3000 m altitude. [Termes IGN] image KompsatRésumé : (Auteur) KARI has prepared Calibration and Validation activities for the KOMPSAT-2 (KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite-2) MSC data that will be launched at the middle of this year. Firstly, we divided the Cal/Val activities of it to four pans, Spatial, Spectral, Radiometric and Geometric, and defined the detailed Cal/Val parameters from them. Secondly, Cal/Val targets have been defined and manufactured for the role of them. Thirdly, we have made the plan and the procedure for the Cal/Val parameters, developed the codes for them, studied more detailed method to do them, and trained the Cal/Val activities using the foreign satellite image data by ourselves. KARI has been now setting up the KOMPSAT-2 LEOP plan with the Cal/Val activities, and probably will finish the EOP Cal/Val activities for the KOMPSAT-2 MSC data by the end of this year. [Termes IGN] satellite agileRésumé : (Auteur) Pleiades is a high-resolution optical Earth observation system developed by the French National Space Agency CNES, for civilian and militarian users. It will operate in 2008-2009 two agile satellites with very high geometric accuracy since latest budgets show that the system could reach, after in-flight commissioning, an absolute location performance better than the current Pleiades specifications set at 12m for 90% of images. Given this level of accuracy, the geometric calibration needs the use of a very high planimetric and altimetric accurate reference data which is obtained with heavy and costly means: generally, only one or two areas are equipped, and complete calibration could take several months after launch. In order to gain time, a first "coarse" calibration will be performed using ground control points and an accurate physical model of the instrument. This first step should allow the system to reach its specifications more quickly. This paper presents the global methodology planned to calibrate the geometric location model. It also highlight the need of an accurate GCP data base for this treatment and for periodic assessment of the location budget.
