[Termes IGN] réflectanceRésumé : (Auteur) Given that many operational satellite sensors are not calibrated, while a handful of research sensors are, cross-calibration between the two types of sensor is a cost-effective means of calibration. A new method of sensor cross-calibration is demonstrated here using the Chinese Multi-channel Visible Infrared Scanning radiometer (MVIRS) and the US Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS). MVIRS has six channels, equivalent to the current National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) and four additional ones for remote sensing of ocean colour and moisture. The MVIRS on-board China's polar-orbiting meteorological satellite (FY-ID) was launched on 15 May 2002 with an earlier overpass time than Terra. The sensor has no on-board calibration assembly. This study attempts to calibrate MVIRS against the well-calibrated MODIS, by taking a series of measures to account for their differences. Clearsky measurements made from the two sensors in July-October 2002 were first collocated. Using the 6S radiative transfer model, MODIS reflectances measured at the top-of-the atmosphere were converted into surface reflectances. They were corrected to the viewing geometry of the MVIRS using the bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) measured on the ground. The spectral response functions of the two sensors were employed to account for spectral discrepancies. After these corrections, very close linear correlations were found between radiances estimated from the MODIS and the digital readings from the MVIRS, from which the calibration gains were derived. The gains differ considerably from the pre-launch values and are subject to degradation over time. The calibration accuracy is estimated to be less than 5%, which is compatible to that obtained by the more expensive vicarious calibration approach. [Termes IGN] précision géométrique (imagerie)Résumé : (Auteur) Unlike its predecessors, Landsat-7 has undergone regular geometric and radiometric performance monitoring and calibration since launch in April 1999. This ongoing activity, which includes issuing quarterly updates to calibration parameters, has generated a wealth of geometric performance data over the four-year on-orbit period of operations. A suite of geometric characterization (measurement and evaluation procedures) and calibration (procedures to derive improved estimates of instrument parameters) methods are employed by the Landsat-7 Image Assessment System to maintain the geometric calibration and to track specific aspects of geometric performance. These include geodetic accuracy, band-to-band registration accuracy, and image-to-image registration accuracy. These characterization and calibration activities maintain image product geometric accuracy at a high level-by monitoring performance to determine when calibration is necessary, generating new calibration parameters, and verifying that new parameters achieve desired improvements in accuracy. Landsat-7 continues to meet and exceed all geometric accuracy requirements, although aging components have begun to affect performance. [Termes IGN] Thematic MapperRésumé : (Auteur) The Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper (TM) sensor provides the longest running continuous dataset of moderate spatial resolution remote sensing imagery, dating back to its launch in march 1984. Historically, the radiometric calibration procedure for this imagery used the instrument's response to the Internal Calibrator (IC) on a scene-by-scene basis to determine the gain and offset of each detector. Due to observed degradations in the IC, a new procedure was implemented for U.S.-processed data in May 2003. This new calibration procedure is based on a lifetime radiometric calibration model for the instrument's reflective bands (1-5 and 7) and is derived, in part, from the IC response without the related degradation effects and is tied to the cross calibration with the Landsat-7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus. Reflective-band absolute radiometric accuracy of the instrument tends to be on the order of 7 % to 10 %, based on a variety of calibration methods. [Termes IGN] surveillance géologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The St. Austell granite of Cornwall, UK contains internationally important deposits of kaolin (china clay), the formation of which result from the alteration of a composite pluton of mineralogically and texturally different primary granite units. To assess the applicability of hyperspectral remote sensing in the St. Austell china clay region, one line of airborne HyMap® hyperspectral data was acquired. These data were processed to correct for atmospheric and illumination effects by calibration from radiance to reflectance data, so that mineral abundance maps could be produced. Minerals associated with the primary granite and its subsequent kaolinisation were identified by image processing and used as mapping endmembers. These minerals include kaolinite, kaolinite with smectite, montmorillonite, muscovite, lepidolite (a lithium mica) and topaz.
Hyperspectral data analysis allowed for the identification of the different primary granite units. The spectrally observed compositional differences of the biotite and topaz granite units of the region allowed for fingerprinting of the source of mined waste material as originating from specific pits. The majority of waste tips in the region originate from the nearest china clay workings. However, waste material used in the construction of a mica dam and also as backfill in a disused pit is successfully identified to have been transported across a mapped granite boundary for storage. The effect of mining and mineral processing on the abundance and spatial distribution of minerals in the region is also evident. Wastetips are classified as containing the greatest abundance of mica. This distribution results from the separation of kaolinite during the mineral processing stages. Kaolinite in lower abundance, however, is also identified within these waste areas and is the result of a less than 100% recovery by mining and processing.Numéro de notice : A2004-425 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : IMAGERIE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1016/j.rse.2004.07.004 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1016/j.rse.2004.07.004 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=26952

A new method is then presented, which is providing elements for this vicarious calibration, starting from sun-photometer ground measurements of sky radiances and degree of polarisation, and based on a neural network approach for the inversion of these measurements in terms of aerosol optical properties.
