[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Land managers need new tools for planning novel futures due to climate change. Species distribution modeling (SDM) has been used extensively to predict future distributions of species under different climates, but their map products are often too coarse for fine-scale operational use. In this study we developed a flexible, efficient, and robust method for mapping current and future distributions and abundances of vegetation species and communities at the fine spatial resolutions that are germane to land management. First, we mapped Potential Vegetation Types (PVTs) using conventional statistical modeling techniques (Random Forests) that used bioclimatic ecosystem process and climate variables as predictors. We obtained over 50% accuracy across 13 mapped PVTs for our study area. We then applied future climate projections as climate input to the Random Forest model to generate future PVT maps, and used field data describing the occurrence of tree and non-tree species in each PVT category to model and map species distribution for current and future climate. These maps were then compared to two previous SDM mapping efforts with over 80% agreement and equivalent accuracy. Because PVTs represent the biophysical potential of the landscape to support vegetation communities as opposed to the vegetation that currently exists, they can be readily linked to climate forecasts and correlated with other, climate-sensitive ecological processes significant in land management, such as fire regimes and site productivity. [Termes IGN] réseau routierRésumé : (Auteur) Recent growth of the geospatial information on the web has made it possible to easily access a wide variety of spatial data. The ability to combine various sets of geospatial data into a single composite dataset has been one of central issues of modern geographic information processing. By conflating diverse spatial datasets, one can support a rich set of queries that could have not been answered given any of these sets in isolation. However, automatically conflating geospatial data from different data sources remains a challenging task. This is because geospatial data obtained from various data sources may have different projections, different accuracy levels and different formats (e.g., raster or vector format), thus resulting in various positional inconsistencies. Most of the existing algorithms only deal with vector to vector data conflation or require human intervention to accomplish vector data to imagery conflation. In this paper, we describe a novel geospatial data fusion approach, named AMS-Conflation, which achieves automatic vector to imagery conflation. We describe an efficient technique to automatically generate control point pairs from the orthoimagery and vector data by exploiting the information from the vector data to perform localized image processing on the orthoimagery. We also evaluate a filtering technique to automatically eliminate inaccurate pairs from the generated control points. We show that these conflation techniques can automatically align the roads in orthoimagery, such that 75% of the conflated roads are within 3.6 meters from the real road axes compared to 35% for the original vector data for partial areas of the county of St. Louis, MO. [Termes IGN] Wyoming (Etats-Unis)Résumé : (Auteur) Visualization techniques have been developed to recreate natural landscapes, but little has been done to investigate their potential for illustrating land cover change using spatio-temporal data. In this work, remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS) and visualization techniques were applied to generate realistic computer visualizations depicting the dynamic nature of forested environments. High resolution digital imagery and aerial photography were classified using object-oriented methods. . The resulting classifications, along with preexisting land cover datasets, were used to drive the correct placement of vegetation in the visualized landscape, providing an accurate representation of reality at various points in time. 3D Nature's Visual Nature Studio was used to construct a variety of realistic images and animations depicting forest cover change in two distinct ecological settings. Visualizations from Yellowstone National Park focused on the dramatic impact of the 1988 fire upon the lodgepole pine forest. For a study area in Kansas, visualization techniques were used to explore the continuous human-land interactions impacting the eastern deciduous. forest and tallgrass prairie ecotone between 1941 and 2002. The resulting products demonstrate the flexibility and effectiveness of visualizations for representing spatio-temporal patterns such as changing forest cover. These geographic visualizations allow users to communicate findings and explore new hypotheses in a clear, concise and effective manner.
