[Termes IGN] transformation inverseRésumé : (auteur) A Lambert Conformal Conic (LCC) projection with two true-scale parallels of latitudes ϕl and ϕu can be recast in a LCC projection with one standard parallel of latitude ϕ0 and scale k0, having the practical advantage that the same type of definition can be used for the two conformal projections universally used: LCC and Transverse Mercator (TM). While equations giving ϕ0 and k0 in terms ϕl and ϕu can be found in the literature, inverse relationships are not readily found. They are derived in the present paper. These may be necessary in views of the planned future definition of the United States State Plane Coordinate System (SPCS) 2022 for the users of particular mapping software requiring to specify the two latitude values instead of the central latitude and central scale. While map projection parameters are customary selected to minimise ellipsoid-to-grid distortions for a region, in some cases it could be more convenient to study and minimise ground-to-grid distortions. Also bearing in mind the design of SPCS 2022, we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of working with each type of distortion definition. [Termes IGN] projection Universal Transverse MercatorRésumé : (auteur) In 1569, the Dutch cartographer Gerard Mercator published a projection that revolutionized maritime navigation. While the current literature notes the significance of the Mercator projection, it does not cover how it became a dominant projection for world maps in thematic and reference cartography. The institutionalization of the Mercator projection in western European and U.S. cartography was the result of the roles played by navigators, scientific societies and agencies, and the producers of popular reference and thematic maps and atlases. The data are pulled from the publication record of world maps and world maps in atlases for content analysis and are compared and contrasted with complementary historical sources. The results reveal that the misuse of the Mercator projection began after 1700, when it was connected to scientists working with navigators and the creation of thematic cartography. During the eighteenth century, the Mercator projection was published in journals and reports for geographic societies that detailed state-sponsored explorations. In the nineteenth century, the influence of well-known scientists using the Mercator projection filtered into publications for the general public. The use of the Mercator projection for world maps in reference and thematic cartography was a choice that was the result of the projection being indirectly validated by the scientific and academic communities from the eighteenth century into the nineteenth century. In short, documents are replaced with databases, processes are automated, and timelines become more circular with an emphasis on managing the life cycles of all manufactured objects. This has both direct and indirect consequences for the fields of geodesy and geographic information. Although geodesy and surveying have played a vital role in the construction process for a long time, new data standards and higher degrees of prefabrication and automation in the actual construction means that the topic of georeferencing must be revisited. In addition, using object oriented data structures means that semantic information must be inferred from geodata such as point clouds and images in order to adequately document existing assets. This thesis addresses the handling of 3D spatial information by analyzing different georeferencing methods and metadata used to describe the quality and characteristics of geodata. The outcomes include a recommendation for how the open BIM standard Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) could be extended to support more robust georeferencing, a suggestion that all standards and exchange formats used forthe built environment should include metadata for tolerance and uncertainty, and a framework that can describe characteristics of 3D spatial data that are not covered by conventional geographic metadata. On the semantic side, this thesis proposes an image-based method for identifying roadside objects in mobile laser scanning (MLS) point clouds, and it also explores the possibilities to train neural networks for point cloud segmentation by creating training data from 3D mesh models used in infrastructure design. Overall, the thesis describes the connection between model and reality, the importance of geodesy and geodetic surveying in this context, and makes contributions to both the geometric and semantic aspects of modeling the built environment. [Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (auteur) Several factors influence the global-scale cognitive map. The use of school books, atlases and web maps all play an essential role in the development of geographical knowledge of adolescents. This research examines the impact of the educational system versus web maps on the adolescents’ mental map. Through a specially designed web application, university students and secondary school pupils estimated the real proportion of countries and continents compared to Europe. Participants with a more theoretical background or wider knowledge about map projections and its distortions estimated the real proportions more accurately. This research also found that the Robinson projection, commonly used in schoolbooks and atlases, is the best-known map projection among adolescents. However, the influence of web maps could not be proven since no Mercator effect was found. Education is of undeniable importance, and therefore, educational materials that encourage people to look more carefully and critically at maps should be further developed. Amongst these, the most known and used projection throughout the world is the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM). The algorithm of calculation presented here, developed by French IGN, has the advantage of using exact formulas and not limited developments like many others, and thus of beeing easily computerized.
