[Termes IGN] résiduRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, a theoretical analysis is presented of the degree of correctness to which the accuracy figures of a grid Digital Elevation Model (DEM) have been estimated, measured as Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) depending on the number of checkpoints used in the accuracy assessment process. The latter concept is sometimes referred to as the Reliability of the DEM accuracy tests. Two theoretical models have been developed for estimating the reliability of the DEM accuracy figures using the number of checkpoints and parameters related to the statistical distribution of residuals (mean, variance, skewness, and standardized kurtosis). A general case was considered in which residuals might be weakly correlated (local spatial autocorrelation) with non-zero mean and non-normal distribution. Thus, we avoided the “strong assumption” of distribution normality accepted in some of the previous works and in the majority of the current standards of positional accuracy control methods. Sampled data were collected using digital photogrammetric methods applied to large scale stereo imagery (1:5 000). In this way, seven morphologies were sampled with a 2 m by 2 m sampling interval, ranging from flat (3 percent average slope) to the highly rugged terrain of marble quarries (82 percent average slope). Two local schemes of interpolation have been employed, using Multiquadric Radial Basis Functions (MRBF) and Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW) interpolators, to generate interpolated surfaces from high-resolution grid DEMs. The theoretical results obtained were experimentally validated using the Monte Carlo simulation method. The proposed models provided a good fit for the raw simulated data for the seven morphologies and the two schemes of interpolation tested (r2 > 0.96 as mean value). The proposed theoretical models performed very well for modeling the non-gaussian distribution of the errors at the checkpoints, a property which is very common in geographically distributed data. [Termes IGN] précision des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Application of polarimetric synthetic aperture radar interferometry to the retrieval of geophysical parameters from yegetated scenes is based on simple direct models of such scenes. The first part of this paper presents an analysis of the correspon-dence between these simple models, namely, the random volume over ground and the oriented volume over ground (OVoG), and experimental data from samples of two agricultural crops (maize and rice) acquired in controlled conditions. Although an overall agreement between model and data is clear, some discrepancies have been found as a consequence of two assumptions in the model formulation: vertical homogeneity of the vegetation volume and absence of multiple scattering effects inside the volume. This paper presents the shape and location of the visible region of the experimental coherences on the complex plane and compares it with the feasible region predicted by the model. This comparison has also pointed out the low sensitivity of the direct model to extinction coefficients. In the second part, two different strategies for a complete inversion (i.e., estimation of all model parameters) of the OVoG model are proposed and compared, using the same data set. The first one is based on a combination of geometrical and numerical approaches (genetic algorithms) and the second one on a dual-baseline configuration. In all cases, ground topography is accurately estimated, with a maximum error of 10 cm. Vegetation height estimates are accurate up to 30 cm, with some bands and baseline configurations providing errors below 15 cm. However, results obtained for the extinction coefficients are not stable with frequency and exhibit high variability. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (Auteur) Lidar data have become a major source of digital terrain information for use in many applications including hydraulic modeling and flood plane mapping. Based on established relationships between sampling intensity and error, nominal post-spacing likely contributes significantly to the error budget. Post-spacing is also a major cost factor during lidar data collection. This research presents methods for establishing a relationship between nominal post-spacing and its effects on hydraulic modeling for flood zone delineation. Lidar data collected at a low post-spacing (approximately 1 to 2 m) over a piedmont study area in North Carolina was systematically decimated to simulate datasets with sequentially higher post-spacing values. Using extensive first-order ground survey information, the accuracy of each DEM derived from these lidar datasets was assessed and reported. Hydraulic analyses were performed utilizing standard engineering practices and modeling software (HEC-RAS). All input variables were held constant in each model run except for the topographic information from the decimated lidar datasets. The results were compared to a hydraulic analysis performed on the un-decimated reference dataset. The sensitivity of the primary model outputs to the variation in nominal post-spacing is reported. The results indicate that base flood elevation does not statistically change over the post-spacing values tested. Conversely, flood zone boundary mapping was found to be sensitive to variations in post-spacing. [Termes IGN] utilisateurRésumé : (Auteur) Accuracy assessment of classified imagery is an important task in remote sensing. Various measures have been developed to describe and compare the accuracy of maps and the performance of different classifiers, but the extent to which these measures are consistent with each other is largely unknown. In this paper the consistency of fourteen category-level and twenty map-level accuracy measures was tested on 595 published error matrices using nonparametric correlation coefficients (Spearman's rho and Kendall's tau-b) as well as the probability of concordance. The results show that four groups can be identified for the category-level measures and three groups for map-level measures. The consistency among the measures within a group is generally higher than that among the measures from different groups though all the measures at the same level are highly consistent with each other. We recommend that user's accuracy and producer's accuracy and the overall accuracy should be provided as primary accuracy measures and the two relative entropy change measures and the mutual information normalized by the arithmetic mean of the entropies on map and ground truthing be provided as supplementary measures. The chance-corrected, error matrix-normalized and user's and producer's accuracy-combined measures were found to contain estimation and interpretation problems at both category- and map-levels and are therefore not recommended for general use.
