[Termes IGN] rééchantillonnageRésumé : (Auteur) Tissot's Indicatrix and regular grids have been used for assessing map projection accuracies. Despite their broad applicability for accuracy assessment, they have limitations in quantifying resampling errors caused by map projections. This is due to the structural uncertainty with regard to the placement and pattern of grids. It is also difficult to calculate the absolute amount of resampling error in each projection. As an alternative to traditional testing methods, the use of random points was investigated. Specifically, random point generation, resampling with spherical block search algorithms, resampling accuracy with a perfect grid, and resampling accuracy with eight projections were investigated and are discussed here. Eight global referencing methods were tested: the equal-area cylindrical, sinusoidal, Mollweide, Eckert IV, Hammer-Aitoff, interrupted Goode homolosine, integerized sinusoidal projections, and the equal area global gridding with a fixed latitudinal metric distance. The resampling accuracy with a perfect grid is about 75 percent. Results showed the sinusoidal and the integerized sinusoidal projections and equal-area global gridding to achieve the highest accuracies. [Termes IGN] spatial metricsRésumé : (Auteur) This paper addresses semantic accuracy in relation to images obtained with remote sensing. Semantic accuracy is defined in terms of map complexity. Complexity metrics are applied as a metric to measure complexity. The idea is that a homogeneous map of a low complexity is of a high semantic accuracy. In this study, complexity metrics like aggregation index, fragmentation index and patch size are applied on two images with different objectives, one from an agricultural area in the Netherlands, and one from a rural area in Kazakhstan. Images are segmented first using region merging segmentation. Effects on metrics and semantic accuracy are discussed. On the basis of well-defined subsets, we conclude that the complexity metrics are suitable to quantify the semantic accuracy of the map. Segmentation is the most useful for an agricultural area including various agricultural fields. Metrics are mutually comparable being highly correlated, but showing some different aspects in quantifying map homogeneity and identifying objects of a high semantic accuracy. [Termes IGN] résolution d'ambiguïtéRésumé : (Editeur) The GPS carrier-phase observable is more than 100 times more precise than the code-based pseudorange observable. Unfortunatly, it is also ambigous. If we want to use the carrier phase as a range measurement in positioning or navigation, we must account somehow for the unknown integer number of cycles or turns of phase in the initial measurement when a GPS receiver locks onto satellite's L1 or L2 signal carrier. Mathematicians, scientists and engineering have developed clever techniques for helping these integer ambiguities either in real time or in post-processing collected data. However, the success of these techniques in correctly determining the ambiguities depends on several factors including wether a point or relative positioning technique is employed, the length of the baseline in relative positioning, and how well a variety of errors afflicting the measurements can be mitigated. One source of such errors is the ionosphere. In this month's column, we examine how ionospheric modeling helps in the resolution of carrier-phase ambiguities and how the rate of success in correctly determining the ambiguities will be much improved when GPS observations are combined with those of the future Gallileo system.
