[Termes IGN] visualisation de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) In recent years, an increased interest in the use of the Space-Time Cube (STC) to visualize movement data can be witnessed. However, little is known about whether the cube is truly efficient and effective to satisfactorily display complex movement datasets. The limited usability research that has been done did not lead to details on how the STC content should be designed and whether the cartographic design influences the exploration process. The conceptual framework that is proposed in this paper offers an approach to the evaluation of the STC content with special attention for design aspects and the environment in which the STC has to function. Systematic usability studies have to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the STC under different conditions. Therefore, the framework contains phased studies in which real-world data of four use cases of different complexity are used. [Termes IGN] Royaume-UniRésumé : (Auteur) The 2001 Output Area Classification (2001 OAC) is an open source geodemographic classification of the UK built exclusively from 2001 UK Census data. There has been considerable user interest in its applicability to subsequent time periods, particularly given the potential propensity of characteristics and attributes in some areas to change during inter-censual periods. Users often purchase commercial geodemographic classification products in the belief that purely census-based classifications such as the 2001 OAC are uniformly unreliable because there is no temporal updating of input data. Yet there is evidence to suggest that whilst some UK neighborhoods are prone to sudden changes, many others change very little over protracted time periods. Using measures that are available at the small area level, temporal uncertainty indicators can be constructed to identify those areas that are less stable. Using mid-year population estimates and dwelling stock data, this article develops three temporal uncertainty indicators. These provide a reliable means of gauging the stability or otherwise of neighborhood conditions. The conclusion from this is that while a large number of small areas in the UK do experience change over time, this change is not uniform in either degree or distribution, or by geodemographic type. [Termes IGN] télédétectionRésumé : (Auteur) The appetite for up-to-date information about earth’s surface is ever increasing, as such information provides a base for a large number of applications, including local, regional and global resources monitoring, land-cover and land-use change monitoring, and environmental studies. The data from remote sensing satellites provide opportunities to acquire information about land at varying resolutions and has been widely used for change detection studies. A large number of change detection methodologies and techniques, utilizing remotely sensed data, have been developed, and newer techniques are still emerging. This paper begins with a discussion of the traditionally pixel-based and (mostly) statistics-oriented change detection techniques which focus mainly on the spectral values and mostly ignore the spatial context. This is succeeded by a review of object-based change detection techniques. Finally there is a brief discussion of spatial data mining techniques in image processing and change detection from remote sensing data. The merits and issues of different techniques are compared. The importance of the exponential increase in the image data volume and multiple sensors and associated challenges on the development of change detection techniques are highlighted. With the wide use of very-high-resolution (VHR) remotely sensed images, object-based methods and data mining techniques may have more potential in change detection Numéro de notice : A2013-299 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : IMAGERIE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1016/j.isprsjprs.2013.03.006 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1016/j.isprsjprs.2013.03.006 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=32437

[Termes IGN] qualité des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) A major theme in the geographical studies of social media content such as tweets from Twitter is to extract the locations of content providers (e.g., Twitter users) in order to track their movements or activity patterns. This framework also has been used to detect the dispersion of ideas over space and time. Another theme is to assess how the interaction of these providers may vary between the physical and virtual spaces. However, few geographical studies have explored if social media content can be used to examine the relationship between the characteristics of content providers and their geographical knowledge at different spatial scales. We expected that in general, one's awareness of the local geography should be higher than that of places farther away. In this paper, we explored if such pattern of geographical awareness in the physical space is reflected in the social media content. We reported our detailed examinations of tweets from a set of individuals who have provided substantial information in their profiles. Using text-mining methods, including natural language processing (NLP) techniques, we identified place names mentioned in the tweets and geocoded them. These locations were analyzed in a geographical-hierarchical manner to build a geographical awareness profile for each individual. While these geographical awareness profiles vary quite dramatically, their variations can be explained by the users’ characteristics, which were interpreted from their tweet content. This study demonstrates how social media content may be used to assess the geographical awareness characteristics of a biased sample population.
