[Termes IGN] regroupement de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Regionalization is to divide a large set of spatial objects into a number of spatially contiguous regions while optimizing an objective function, which is normally a homogeneity (or heterogeneity) measure of the derived regions. This research proposes and evaluates a family of six hierarchical regionalization methods. The six methods are based on three agglomerative clustering approaches, including the single linkage, average linkage (ALK), and the complete linkage (CLK), each of which is constrained with spatial contiguity in two different ways (i.e. the first-order constraining and the full-order constraining). It is discovered that both the Full-Order-CLK and the Full-Order-ALK methods significantly outperform existing methods across four quality evaluations: the total heterogeneity, region size balance, internal variation, and the preservation of data distribution. Moreover, the proposed algorithms are efficient and can find the solution in O(n 2log n) time. With such data scalability, for the first time it is possible to effectively regionalize large data sets that have 10 000 or more spatial objects. A detailed comparison and evaluation of the six methods are carried out with the 2004 US presidential election data. [Termes IGN] règle d'associationRésumé : (Auteur) Many association rule-mining algorithms have been proposed in the last few years. Their main drawback is the huge amount of generated patterns. In spatial association rule mining, besides the large amount of rules, many are well-known geographic domain associations explicitly represented in geographic database schemas. Existing algorithms have only considered the data, while the schema has not been considered. The result is that also the associations explicitly represented in geographic database schemas are extracted by association rule-mining algorithms. With the aim to reduce the number of well-known patterns and association rules, this paper presents a summary of results of a novel approach to extract patterns from geographic databases. A two step-pruning method is presented to avoid the generation of association rules that are previously known to be uninteresting. Experiments with real geographic databases show a considerable time reduction in both geographic data pre-processing and spatial association rule mining, with a very significant reduction in the total number of rules. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Rapid land development in rapidly growing countries has created a series of land-use problems. The implementation of sustainable land use can alleviate some of these problems. It needs a set of tools for the exploration, design, modification, illustration, and evaluation of alternative planning scenarios. This paper demonstrates that the integration of cellular automata and agent-based modelling can provide a spatial exploratory tool for generating alternative development patterns. Sustainable development strategies are embedded in the modelling to regulate agents' behaviours. The use of agents can help to represent human-environment interactions in solving complex land-use problems. It is able to examine the effects of different stakeholders in influencing the process of land development. The proposed model has been applied to the simulation of planning scenarios for residential development in a rapidly expanding city in the Pearl River Delta. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This paper proposes a novel rough set approach to discover classification rules in real-valued spatial data in general and remotely sensed data in particular. A knowledge induction process is formulated to select optimal decision rules with a minimal set of features necessary and sufficient for a remote sensing classification task. The approach first converts a real-valued or integer-valued decision system into an interval-valued information system. A knowledge induction procedure is then formulated to discover all classification rules hidden in the information system. Two real-life applications are made to verify and substantiate the conceptual arguments. It demonstrates that the proposed approach can effectively discover in remotely sensed data the optimal spectral bands and optimal rule set for a classification task. It is also capable of unraveling critical spectral band(s) discerning certain classes. The framework paves the road for data mining in mixed spatial databases consisting of qualitative and quantitative data. [Termes IGN] visualisation 3DRésumé : (Auteur) High-resolution spatio-temporal datasets are being collected every day to record the behaviour of several natural phenomena. However, data-mining techniques are needed to extract relevant patterns from very large repositories and reveal spatial and temporal patterns in the behaviour of these phenomena. To this aim, we propose a system for mining data with spatial and temporal characteristics, and for visualizing and interpreting the results. Within this system, we have developed two complementary 3D visualization environments, one based on Google Earth and one relying on a Java3D graphical user interface. In this paper, we illustrate the main features of the system we have developed, and report on the main results we have obtained by analysing the Hurricane Isabel dataset.
