[Termes IGN] Rotation Forest classificationRésumé : (auteur) Mangrove forests are important constitutions for sustainable development of coastal ecosystems, and they are often mapped and monitored with remote sensing approaches. Satellite images allow detailed studies of the distribution and composition of mangrove forests, and therefore facilitate the management and conservation of the ecosystems. The combination of multiple types of satellite images with different spatial and spectral resolutions is helpful in mangrove forests extraction and mangrove species discrimination as it reduces sampling workload and increases classification accuracies. In this study, the 1.0-m-resolution Gaofen-2 (GF-2) and the 5.0-m-resolution RapidEye-4 (RE-4) satellite images, acquired in February 2017 and November 2016 respectively, were used with ensemble machine-learning and object-oriented methods for mangroves mapping at both the community and species levels of the Qi’ao Island, Zhuhai, China. First, the mangroves on the island were segmented from the GF-2 image on a large scale, and then they were extracted combining with their digital elevation model (DEM) data. Second, the GF-2 image was further processed on a fine scale, in which object-oriented features from both the GF-2 and RE-4 images were extracted for each mangrove species. Third, it is followed by the mangrove species classification process which involves three ensemble machine-learning methods: the adaptive boosting (AdaBoost), the random forest (RF) and the rotation forest (RoF). These three methods employed a classification and regression tree (CART) as the base classifier. The results show that the overall accuracy (OA) of mangrove area extraction on the Qi’ao Island with the auxiliary data, DEM, achieves 98.76% (Kappa coefficient (κ) = 0.9289). The features extracted by the GF-2 and RE-4 images were shown to be beneficial for mangrove species discrimination. A maximum improvement in the OA of approximately 8% and a κκ of approximately 0.10 were achieved when employing RoF (OA = 92.01%, κ = 0.9016). Ensemble-learning methods can significantly improve the classification accuracy of CART, and the use of a bagging scheme (RF and RoF) is shown as a better way to map mangrove species than adaptive boosting (AdaBoost). In addition, RoF performed well in mangrove species classification but it was not as robust as the RF, whose average OA and κκ were 80.59% and 0.7608, respectively, while the RoF’s were 77.45% and 0.7214, respectively, in the 10-fold cross-validation. Note de contenu : Introduction

The preservation of these EES through space and time requires a good characterization of the resources. Especially in mountains, stands are very heterogeneous and timber harvesting is economically possible thanks to trees of higher value. This is why we want to be able to map each tree and estimate its characteristics, including quality, which is related to its shape and growth conditions. Field inventories are not able to provide a wall to wall cover of detailed tree-level information on a large scale. On the other hand, remote sensing tools seem to be a promising technology because of the time efficient and the affordable costs for studying forest areas. LiDAR data provide detailed information from the vertical distribution and location of the trees, but it is limited for mapping species. Hyperspectral data are associated to absorption features in the canopy reflectance spectrum, but is not effective for characterizing tree geometry. Hyperspectral and LiDAR systems provide independent and complementary data that are relevant for the assessment of biophysical and biochemical attributes of forest areas. This PhD thesis deals with the fusion of LiDAR and hyperspectral data to characterize individual forest trees. The leading idea is to improve methods to derive forest information at tree-level by extracting geometric and radiometric features. The contributions of this research work relies on: i) an updated review of data fusion methods of LiDAR and hyperspectral data for forest monitoring, ii) an improved 3D segmentation algorithm for delineating individual tree crowns based on Adaptive Mean Shift (AMS3D) and an ellipsoid crown shape model, iii) a criterion for feature selection based on random forests score, 5-fold cross validation and a cumulative error function for forest tree species classification. The two main methods used to derive forest information at tree level are tested with remote sensing data acquired in the French Alps. Note de contenu : 1 Introduction

[Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (auteur) Mapping the spatial distribution of woody and herbaceous vegetation in high temporal resolution in savannas would be beneficial for modeling interrelationships between trees and grasses, and monitoring fuel loads and biomass for livestock. In this study, we developed a frequency decomposition method to separate woody and herbaceous vegetation components using Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) time series. The results were validated using fractional cover data derived from high-resolution images. The validation revealed a close relationship between our decomposed NDVI and corresponding fractional cover (R2 = 0.55 and 0.64 for woody and herbaceous components, respectively). We examined the spatial and temporal patterns of the decomposed NDVI, where woody and herbaceous NDVI showed different responses to precipitation. The methods proposed in this study can be used to separate the woody and herbaceous NDVI time series as an alternative approach for monitoring woody and herbaceous vegetation interrelationships related to climatic drivers. [Termes IGN] TunisieRésumé : (auteur) This article presents some illustrations of (fully or partial) polarimetric radar data applications for the monitoring of terrestrial surfaces. The first part is dedicated to fully polarimetric radar data. Firstly, a theoretical reminder presents the specificity of fully polarimetric data. Then illustrations are given for vegetation types cartography as well as spatio-temporal processes of sedimentation in a semi-arid area in Tunisia. The second part focuses on partially polarimetric data, of the type acquired by the Sentinel-1A/1B satellite SAR sensors, which will be widely used in future years due to their significant contribution to land surface observations studies for environmental sciences.
