The method provides a compact model while preserving details: Irregular elements such as statues and ornaments are described by meshes, whereas regular structures such as columns and walls are described by primitives (planes, spheres, cylinders, cones, and tori). We adopt a two-step strategy consisting first in segmenting the initial mesh-based surface using a multilabel Markov Random Field-based model and second in sampling primitive and mesh components simultaneously on the obtained partition by a Jump-Diffusion process. The quality of a reconstruction is measured by a multi-object energy model which takes into account both photo-consistency and semantic considerations (i.e., geometry and shape layout). The segmentation and sampling steps are embedded into an iterative refinement procedure which provides an increasingly accurate hybrid representation. Experimental results on complex urban structures and large scenes are presented and compared to state-of-the-art multiview stereo meshing algorithms. Earth modeling must now face new challenges since petroleum exploration no longer consists in only investigating newly identified resources, but also in re-evaluating the potential of previously investigated reservoirs in the light of new prospecting data and of revised interpretations. Earth models incorporate a variety of different interpretations made on various types of data at successive steps of the modeling process. However, current modeling procedures provide no way to link a range of data and interpretations with a final earth model. For this reason, sharing and exchanging information about the model building process is at present a major difficulty. Recently, the term "Shared Earth Modeling" has been used for expressing the idea that earth models should be built in such a way that experts and end users can have access, at any time, to all the information incorporated into the model. This information does not only concern the data, but also the knowledge that geoscientists produce by interpreting these data. Accordingly, practical solutions must be studied for operating a knowledge-driven approach of Shared Earth Modeling. This is the goal of this book. This study of earth subsurface modeling is intended for several categories of readers. It concerns in the first place geologists, engineers and managers involved in the study and evaluation of subsurface reservoirs and hydrocarbon exploration. Relying on recent progress in various fields of computer sciences, the authors present innovative solutions for solving the critical issue of knowledge exchange at key steps of the modeling process. This book will also be of interest to researchers in computer science and, more generally, to engineers, researchers and students who wish to apply advanced knowledge-based techniques to complex engineering problems. [Termes IGN] solideRésumé : (Auteur) The goal of this research is to develop a 3D topological structure to represent a 3D space partition with validation functionality and support for conversions from topological to geometrical primitives. Several 3D topological structures have been presented in the past, mainly by researchers. The technical (implementation) model developed in this paper is based on the conceptual model of the ISO 19107 spatial schema' standard and consists of four topological primitives: node, edge, face, and volume, which are related to each other via their (co)boundary relationships. In our setting, only linear primitives (no curves) are supported and no isolated and dangling primitives are allowed. In our model, the rings, the shells, and the orientation play key roles within the topological structure and the functions that implement the geometrical realization. There was no formal definition of a valid 3D topological structure available and this paper presents such a definition, which is the main novel contribution. This definition is presented in three levels, where at every next level the definition is further refined such that finally a set of rules is proposed, which can be implemented unambiguously. In order to validate a 3D topological structure, the involved volumes must be valid as well as the whole structure, which means the relationships between the volumes. The rules for a valid structure have been implemented on top of Oracle Spatial and tested with artificial and real-world test data.
