Tree cover and height are important variables to characterize this vegetation transition. Accurate continuous fields of tree cover and height would enable the delineation of the forest extent according to different criterion and provide useful data for change detection of this climatically sensitive ecotone. This study examined if multiangular remote sensing data has potential to improve the accuracy of the tree cover and height estimates in relation to nadir-view data. The satellite data consisted of Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) data at 275 m and 1.1 km resolutions. The study area was located in the Fennoscandian tundra–taiga transition zone, in northernmost Finland. The continuous fields of tree cover and height were estimated using neural networks, which were trained and assessed by high-resolution biotope inventory data. The spectral–angular data together produced lower estimation errors than single band nadir, multispectral nadir or single band multiangular data alone. RMSE of the tree cover estimates reduced from 7.8% (relative RMSE 67.4%) to 6.5% (56.1%) at 275 m resolution, and from 5.4% (49.2%) to 4.1% (36.9%) at 1.1 km resolution, when multispectral nadir data were used together with multiangular data. RMSE of the tree height estimates reduced from 2.3 m (44.3%) to 2.0 m (37.6%) and from 1.8 m (35.4%) to 1.3 m (25.4%), respectively. The largest estimation errors occurred in mires and in areas of dense shrub cover, but the use of multiangular data also reduced estimation errors in these areas. The results suggest that directional information has potential to improve the tree cover and height estimates, and hence the accuracy of the land cover change detection in the tundra–taiga transition zone. [Termes IGN] propagation d'erreurRésumé : (Auteur) The aim of our study was to characterize statistical and spatial details of the errors in a fine toposcale DEM derived by contour data. The fine toposcale DEMs are typically represented in a 5-50 m grid and used in the application scale 1:10000-1:50000. The errors were determined by using high-quality reference data covering the entire study area from an airborne laser scanner. The work was motivated because of the essential role played by the correct characterization of DEM error in error-propagation studies. The results showed that the spatial autocorrelation of the fine toposcale DEM error was the result of a complex combination of random and systematic-like components, and its appropriate modelling by geostatistical methods is problematic because of the small extent of the areas in which the assumption of stationarity is valid. In addition, describing the shape of the DEM error distribution was impossible with a single parameter of dispersion. This was due to a large number of outliers, which suggests that more robust descriptors of the error should be used in addition to conventional error statistics. [Termes IGN] SuèdeRésumé : (Auteur) Given the importance of coloured dissolved organic matter (CDOM) for the structure and function of lake ecosystems, a method to estimate the amount of CDOM in lake waters over large geographic areas would be highly desirable. Advanced Land Imager (ALI) images were acquired in southern Finland (in 2002) and southern Sweden (in 2003) together with in situ. measurements of bio-optical properties of 34 lakes (39 measuring stations). Based on this dataset, a band-ratio type algorithm was developed using ALI band 2 and band 3 for estimating CDOM content (absorption of filtrated water at 420 nm) in lakes. Correlation between in situ measured CDOM and the remote sensing estimate of CDOM was high, r2=0 .73. The CDOM retrieval algorithm obtained on the basis of two images and in situ data was validated on a third ALI image (eastern Finland, 2002) that was available in the ALI image archive. In situ water-colour monitoring data from 22 lakes (27 measuring stations) in the third image were available in a database of the Finnish Environment Administration. The water-colour data were converted to CDOM absorption values, which were then compared to the results from a third ALI image. The correlation between remotely estimated and in situ CDOM values in the algorithm validation image was high, r2=0 .83. These results support the conclusion that CDOM content in lakes over a wide range of concentrations (aCDOM(420) between 0.68 and 11.13 m-1) can be mapped using Advanced Land Imager data. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Data collection for forest planning in private forestry in Finland is based on periodic, labour-intensive, stand level field inventories. Therefore, to increase guidance for forest owners more cost-efficient methods that replace or supplement field inventories are needed so as to reallocate labour resources. In addition, for active forest owners, up-to-date information is of interest. The aim of this thesis was to test the applicability of different inventory and updating methods that are based on aerial photography for the regional forest inventory of private forests in Finland. Four approaches were chosen: I) stand level visual interpretation of changes and simulation of stand development, 2) automatic, stand level interpretation of aerial photographs utilising nonparametric estimation, 3) automatic, photogrammetric estimation of mean height, and 4) automatic, monoscopic identification of individual trees. Approaches I and 2 are inventory or updating methods, while approaches 3 and 4 can be considered as components of such methods. Approach 1 was found to be appropriate for operative use for estates that have not ordered a forest plan, provided that the strict prerequisites for the inventory area are met. The- accuracy of approach 2, as such, was not considered to be high enough for forest planning, but this very inexpensive method could turn out to be applicable, if its accuracy could be improved. Approach 3 was based on image matching and would be most useful as a part of other methods, like template matching in multiple images. Although only identification of trees was tested in approach 4, the applicability of whole single tree based inventory method was appraised. Relatively high costs and low accuracy limit the possibilities to use this method, in practice. Note de contenu : Introduction
