[Termes IGN] visualisation 3DRésumé : (auteur) Governments and companies around the world collect point clouds (datasets containing elevation points) because these are useful for many applications, e.g. to reconstruct 3D city models, to understand and predict the impact of floods, and to monitor dikes. We address in this paper the visualisation of point clouds, which is perhaps the most essential instrument a practitioner or a scientist has to analyse and understand such datasets. We argue that it is currently hampered by two main problems: (1) point clouds are often massive (several billion points); (2) the viewer's perception of depth and structure is often lost (because of the sparse and unstructured points). We propose solving both problems by using the Medial Axis Transform (MAT) and its properties. This allows us to (1) smartly simplify a point cloud in a geometry-dependent way (to preserve only significant features), and (2) to render splats whose radii are adaptive to the distribution of points (and thus obtain less “holes” in the surface). Our main contribution is a series of heuristics that allows us to compute the MAT robustly for noisy real-world LiDAR point clouds, and to compute the MAT for point clouds that do not fit into the main memory. We have implemented our algorithms, we report on experiments made with point clouds (of more than one billion points), and we demonstrate that we are able to render scenes with much less points than in the original point cloud (we preserve around 10%) while retaining good depth-perception and a sense of structure at close viewing distances. [Termes IGN] solideRésumé : (Auteur) The RANSAC (RANdom SAmple Consensus) is often used to identify points belonging to the objects whose shape can be modeled with geometric primitives. These points, called inliers, are of great interest in some applications but often the goal is also to estimate the parameters of geometric shape and their accuracies. The quality of RANSAC results is rarely analyzed. The accuracies of estimated parameters are usually calculated based only on the residuals of inliers, selected by RANSAC, from a mathematical model. However, the analysis does not indicate if the right points were selected. The result of RANSAC depends on the random selection of the minimum number of points that uniquely describe a mathematical model; in the case of multiple repetitions of the method, the results are not necessarily the same. This paper presents an analysis of RANSAC reliability based on repeating the selection of points from the point cloud by RANSAC one hundred times. A standard deviation of one hundred parameter values is used to estimate the parameters’ accuracies. An analysis is made for three different examples of geometric objects: a sphere, a cone, and a plane. Finally, we suggest repeating the algorithm several times and checking the consistency of the results to obtain a more reliable estimation of parameters and their accuracies. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Urban neighborhoods are a unique form of geography in that their boundaries rely on a social definition rather than a well-defined physical or administrative boundary. Currently, geographic gazetteers capture little more than then the centroid of a neighborhood, limiting potential applications of the data. In this paper, we present µ-shapes, an algorithm that employs fuzzy-set theory to model neighborhood boundaries suitable for populating gazetteers using volunteered geographic information (VGI). The algorithm is evaluated using a reference dataset and VGI from the Map Kibera Project. A confusion matrix comparison between the reference dataset and µ-shape's output demonstrated high sensitivity and accuracy. Analysis of variance indicated that the algorithm was able to distinguish between boundary and interior blocks. This suggests that, given the existing state of GIS technology, the µ-shapes algorithm can enable neighborhood-related queries that incorporate spatial uncertainty, e.g., find all restaurants within the core of a neighborhood. [Termes IGN] réalité de terrainRésumé : (Auteur) Nadir viewing satellite image is an effective data source to generate orthomosaics. Because of the georeferencing error of satellite images, block adjustment is the first step of orthomosaic generation over a large area. However, the geometric relationship of the neighboring orbits of the nadir viewing images is not rigid enough. This paper proposes a new rational function model (RFM) block adjustment approach that constrains the tie point elevation to enhance the relative geometric rigidity. By interpolating the elevations of tie points in a digital elevation model (DEM) and estimating the a priori errors of the interpolated elevations, better overall relative accuracy is obtained, and the local optimal solution problem is avoided. By constraining the adjusted model parameters according to the a priori error of RFMs, block adjustment without ground control point (GCP) is performed. By optimal initializing the object-space positions of tie points with multi-backprojection method, the needed iteration times of block adjustment are reduced. The proposed approach is investigated with 46 Ziyuan-3 sensor-corrected images, a 1:50 000 scale DEM, and 586 GCPs. Compared with Teo's approach that constrains the horizontal coordinates and elevations of tie points, the approach in this paper converges much faster when the GCPs are sparse, and meanwhile, the absolute and relative accuracy of the two approaches are almost the same. The result of block adjustment with only four GCPs shows that no accuracy degeneration occurred in the test area and the root-mean-square error of independent check point reaches about 1.5 ground resolutions. Different DEMs and number of tie points are used to investigate whether the block adjustment result is influenced by these factors. The results show that better DEM accuracy and denser tie points do improve the accuracy when the images have large side-sway angles. The proposed approach is also tested with 5118 IKONOS-2 images that cover the southern Europe without GCP. The result shows that the relative mosaicking accuracy is much better than that of Grodecki's approach. Note de contenu : Introduction
