[Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a fully automated approach for area detection and delineation based on multispectral images and features from a topographic database. The vectors residing in the database are refined using active contours (snakes) according to updated information provided by the multispectral images. The conventional methods of defining the external energy guiding the deformation of the snake based on: (1) statistical measures; or (2) gradientbased boundary finding is often corrupted by poor image quality. Here a method to integrate the two approaches is proposed using an estimation of the maximum a posteriori (MAP) segmentation in an effort to form a unified approach that is robust to noise and poor edges. We further propose to improve the accuracy of the resulting boundary location and update of the snake topology. A number of experiments are performed on both synthetic and LANDSAT 7 images to evaluate the approach. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Urban area building extraction is one of the most challenging problems in photogrammetry. Wellextracted buildings are needed for a variety of applications, such as cartography, building GIS databases for cities, and urban planning. This paper presents a new technique to extract 3D building wireframes using a robust multiimage linematching algorithm. Although one pair of images is adequate to find the 3D position of two visibly corresponding image, features, it is not sufficient to solve the general building extraction problem due to obscured parts in the building. Four images are used in this research to extract the building wireframes. First the images are segmented into regions. Regions are then classified into roof regions and nonroof regions based on their size, shape, and intensity values. The roof region boundary pixels are located and used to find the region perimeters. Region correspondence is solved in a pairwise mode over all images using the epipolar constraint, region size, region shape, and region intensity values. Image lines within the corresponding regions are matched over all images simultaneously by first creating a plane for each region line. Planes are then intersected simultaneously and geometric consistency is used to determine acceptance or rejection. Results with high overlap and sidelap aerial images are presented and evaluated. The results show the completeness and accuracy that this method can provide for extracting complex urban buildings. The average coordinate accuracy is about 08 m using 1:4000 scale aerial photographs scanned at 30 um Six buildings were examined; the line detection rate is 98%. [Termes IGN] transformation de HoughRésumé : (Auteur) Automatic matching of freeform linear features in overlapping largescale imagery over urban areas still remains to be a problem in both the photogrammetric and computer vision communities. Although there is a variety of algorithms that have been developed to solve this problem, reliable results are not always guaranteed. Differences in illumination conditions, relief displacement, and occlusions are some of the factors that make solving the matching problem more challenging. The deficiency of available techniques stems from the fact that they do not consider the perspective geometry of the imaging system in the matching process. Moreover, it is usually assumed that conjugate entities are almost exact copies of each other (this is rarely the case). The need for a reliable algorithm that can handle largescale imagery over urban areas is growing, especially with the increasing availability of high resolution aerial imagery. In this research, a new approach for automatic matching and threedimensional reconstruction of freeform linear features from stereo images is proposed. The suggested strategy is based on The Modified Iterated Hough Transform (MIHT) for Robust Parameter Estimation, MIHT relies on the mathematical relationship between conjugate entities (the coplanarity condition when dealing with a stereo pair). As a result, it overcomes problems arising from relief displacements and/or occlusions. Moreover, MIHT simultaneously solves for the relative orientation parameters as well as the correspondence between conjugate entities in a stereo pair. Matching ambiguities along and across conjugate epipolar lines are observed in the correspondence output from MIHT. Ambiguities along the epipolar lines stem from the nature of the coplanarity model, which establishes the correspondence between conjugate epipolar lines rather than conjugate points. On the other hand, ambiguities across the epipolar lines are expected due to the discrete cell size of the implemented accumulator array in MIHT. In this work, the ambiguities are resolved through several pruning techniques such as correlation coefficient, edge connectivity, height information, and epipolar geometry. Conjugate entities with subpixel accuracy are finally used to reconstruct accurate and reliable threedimensional imagespace discontinuities. Various experiments using largescale imagery over urban areas proved the reliability and robustness of the proposed method.
