[Termes IGN] modèle numérique de surfaceRésumé : (Auteur) Thin plate spline interpolation is a widely used approach to generate a digital elevation model (DEM) from contour lines and scattered data. In practice, contour maps are scanned and vectorized, and after resampling in the target grid resolution, interpolation is performed. In this paper we demonstrate the limited accuracy of this process, and propose a high-resolution processing method (without vectorization) that ensures maximum utilization of information in the source data. First, we discuss the mathematical background of thin plate spline interpolation, and explain the multigrid relaxation principle used to speed up convergence. After, we will show why fine tuning is necessary, especially when contour lines and elevation points are processed at the same time. Finally, our own contour thinning method that produces a significant reduction of elevation bias is described. [Termes IGN] population urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) We present a geometric and graphic approach to studying spatial patterns of urban hierarchy in the US. The multiplicatively weighted Voronoï diagram is found to be effective for visualizing theoretical regions delineated by socio-economic variables. The population landscape of the continental US demonstrates overall and stepwise patterns reflecting population, neighborhood and distance, with overwhelming influence from huge metropolitan areas. Stepwise exploration and cluster analysis of the spatial pattern reveal an urban hierarchy. Attributes and arrangement are the two important factors of urban hierarchy, with attribute having a stronger local influence and arrangement having a stronger global influence. The study also presents a variation of Zipf's law to visualize the rank-size distribution from tabular and statistical space to map. [Termes IGN] propagation d'erreurRésumé : (Auteur) The aim of our study was to characterize statistical and spatial details of the errors in a fine toposcale DEM derived by contour data. The fine toposcale DEMs are typically represented in a 5-50 m grid and used in the application scale 1:10000-1:50000. The errors were determined by using high-quality reference data covering the entire study area from an airborne laser scanner. The work was motivated because of the essential role played by the correct characterization of DEM error in error-propagation studies. The results showed that the spatial autocorrelation of the fine toposcale DEM error was the result of a complex combination of random and systematic-like components, and its appropriate modelling by geostatistical methods is problematic because of the small extent of the areas in which the assumption of stationarity is valid. In addition, describing the shape of the DEM error distribution was impossible with a single parameter of dispersion. This was due to a large number of outliers, which suggests that more robust descriptors of the error should be used in addition to conventional error statistics.
