[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) This article presents an algorithmic approach to the problem of finding symmetries in building footprints, which is motivated by map generalization tasks such as symmetry-preserving building simplification and symmetry-aware grouping and aggregation. Moreover, symmetries in building footprints may be used for landmark selection and building classification. The presented method builds up on existing methods for symmetry detection in vector data that use algorithms for string matching. It detects both mirror symmetries and repetitions of geometric structures. In addition to the existing vector-based methods, the new method finds partial symmetries in polygons while allowing for small geometric errors and, based on a least-squares approach, computes optimally adjusted mirror axes and assesses their quality. Finally, the problem of grouping symmetry relations is addressed with an algorithm that finds mirror axes that are almost collinear. The presented approach was tested on a large building dataset of the metropolitan Boston area and its results were compared with results that were manually generated in an empirical test. The symmetry relations that the participants of the test considered most important were found by the algorithm. Future work will deal with the integration of information on symmetry relations into algorithms for map generalization. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) Polygon generalisation is an essential process to produce multi-scale polygonal maps which are able to visualize categorical data at various levels of detail and with multiple themes. Detecting geometric conflicts, existing within an individual polygon and between polygons, is a primary step for polygon generalisation. This paper designs an inward-outward-buffering approach to detect narrow conflicts within an individual polygon. The approach not only detects the existence of narrow sections but also indicates their exact locations inside polygons. Another approach is presented to detect proximity conflicts in between polygons with two main steps. The first step associates buffering with an optimized proximity index to explore possible polygon clusters and spatial contexts around a problematic polygon. Based on the detected polygon clusters, the conflict regions are identified by combining outward-inward-buffering with topological operators. The tests with a real landuse dataset and two maps from other papers demonstrate that the presented approaches not only detect geometric conflict effectively, but also provide useful information for the selection of subsequent generalisation operators. [Termes IGN] trait de côteRésumé : (Auteur) This study compares two automated approaches, the transect-from-baseline technique and a new change polygon method, for quantifying historical coastal change over time. The study shows that the transect-from-baseline technique is complicated by choice of a proper baseline as well as generating transects that intersect with each other rather than with the nearest shoreline. The change polygon method captures the full spatial difference between the positions of the two shorelines and average coastal change is the defined as the ratio of the net area divided by the shoreline length. Although then change polygon method is sensitive to the definition and measurement of shoreline length, the results are more invariant to parameter changes than the transect-from-baseline method, suggesting that the change polygon technique may be a more robust coastal change method. Note de contenu : 1 Introduction
