[Termes IGN] végétationRésumé : (Auteur) Ce travail s'inscrit dans un processus d'interprétation globale de scène. Nous nous plaçons dans une situation où nous possédons des algorithmes destinés à reconstruire des objets cartographiques à partir de primitives images (voir par exemple, "interprétation et restitution automatiques des bâtiments sur images aériennes", Bulletin d'information de l'IGN n°64) et cherchons à les utiliser aux endroits où se situent ces objets et non sur l'ensemble de l'image. En effet, une utilisation "en aveugle" de ces algorithmes est source de calculs longs, d'explosion combinatoire et de nombreuses fausses alertes, ce qui nous oblige en général à imposer des contraintes très strictes aux modèles d'objets recherchés. Par exemple, nous imposons des contraintes très strictes d'angle droit aux bâtiments composés de rectangles, détectés par l'algorithme cité précédemment, nous réduisons ainsi le nombre de possibilités, mais augmentons d'autant les risques de "passer à coté" d'un bâtiment mal contrasté ... Une première étape de focalisation est donc un atout majeur pour interpréter une scène, puisque d'une part elle permet de choisir l'algorithme de reconstruction correspondant à l'objet discerné, d'autre part elle permet de s'affranchir de contraintes strictes sur les paramètres, le nombre de primitives étant réduit dans chaque périmètre d'étude. Cette étape de focalisation se décompose en deux parties : détection de la présence d'un objet puis d'un périmètre d'étude pour l'algorithme. Elle peut s'affiner par itérations successives grâce à l'introduction de nouveaux critères (on peut aussi le voir comme une modélisation de plus en plus fine des objets à focaliser). Ainsi les zones de sursol détectées par analyse d'un modèle numérique d'élévation (MNE) (voir "Appariement stéréoscopique d'images aériennes et extraction du sursoi en milieu péri-urbain", Bulletin d'information de l'IGN n°65, pages 14-17) peuvent être étiquetées plus précisément - voire re-segmentées - en zones bâties et zones de végétation. Le travail que nous présentons ici est destiné à fournir à l'étape de focalisation, une indication de la présence de structures linéaires dans le voisinage de tout point de l'image. On imagine tout de suite l'utilité d'un tel critère : détecter la présence d'objets "polygonaux", puis utiliser des algorithmes basés sur des modèles géométriques (groupement perceptuel, par exemple). Une vision simpliste des images aériennes serait d'attribuer à tout ce qui contient des structures linéaires une main humaine, puis d'attribuer à ce qui n'est pas structuré, une essence naturelle. Nous verrons que cette vision contient une part intéressante de vérité, mais qu'elle se heurte aux notions de pixels et de résolution. Nous verrons aussi poindre une troisième classe : les zones homogènes.
