The quality of such maps is affected by several factors, such as (a) the matching between the features on images and the graphic symbols from maps, (b) the complexity of background images, and (c) the representation of graphic and text symbols on the images. This project deals with the first issue. The current solution is that the accuracy of images should satisfy the accuracy standard of maps. However, images with different resolutions can satisfy the standard for a specific map scale. This may lead to a situation in which the levels of detail (LoD) in images may not match the complexity of map features although the planimetric accuracy is matched. To solve this problem, we developed a complexity-based matching between the image resolution and map scale. More precisely, the matching is based on the complexity of line features. Experimental evaluations were conducted in 15 representative areas in Hong Kong using maps at seven scales and eight image resolutions. Results show that the proposed complexity-based method is capable of obtaining good matching between image resolution and map scale in terms of both accuracy and users’ preference. This paper uses the idea of line simplification to typify linear building groups. Firstly, based on the stroke idea, the linear building groups are detected that each building group is related by only one stroke; the collinear and curvilinear patterns are distinguished by calculating the overlap rate between the defined auxiliary polygon and its oriented bounding box. Secondly, the stroke is simplified by removing one node in each iterative step; and the remained nodes are reallocated to the new positions, which serves as the centroids location of the newly typified buildings. Third, the representation (size, shape, elongation, and orientation) of the newly typified buildings are calculated by the geometry information of their corresponding parent buildings. The typification method can be carried out as a progressive process, which iterates over the three steps to derive continuous typification results. The method is tested on two building datasets, and the experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve good performance by well preserving the original linear patterns in the generalized building groups. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (auteur) Streets are essential entities of urban terrain and their automatic extraction from airborne sensor data is cumbersome because of a complex interplay of geometric, topological, and semantic aspects. Given a binary image representing the road class, centerlines of road segments are extracted by means of skeletonization. The focus of this paper lies in a well-reasoned representation of these segments by means of geometric primitives, such as straight line segments as well as circle and ellipse arcs. Thereby, we aim at a fusion of raw segments to longer chains which better match to the intuitive perception of what a street is. We propose a two-step approach for simultaneous chain-forming and generalization. First, we obtain an over-segmentation of the raw polylines. Then, a model selection approach is applied to decide whether two neighboring segments should be fused to a new geometric entity. For this purpose, we propose an iterative greedy optimization procedure in order to find a strong minimum of a cost function based on a Bayesian information criterion. Starting at the given initial raw segments, we thus can obtain a set of chains describing long alleys and important roundabouts. Within the procedure, topological attributes, such as junctions and neighborhood structures, are consistently updated, in a way that for the greedy optimization procedure, accuracy, model complexity, and topology are considered simultaneously. The results on two challenging datasets indicate the benefits of the proposed procedure and provide ideas for future work. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (auteur) This paper presents an automated topographic feature lines detection method that directly extracts 3D vector topographic feature lines from terrain point cloud. First, signed surface variation (SSV) is introduced to extract the potential feature points. Secondly, the potential feature points are segmented to different clusters by combining region growing segmentation and conditional Euclidean clustering. In order to extract feature points, the potential feature points in each cluster are iteratively thinned using a HC-Laplacian smoothing method with SSV weighted taken into account. Besides, SSV-based and elevation-based simple rules are added for accelerating this thinning process. Finally, the feature lines are obtained by constructing the minimum spanning tree of the extracted feature points. By comparing with manually digitized reference lines, the correctness and the completeness of extracted results are about 80% or even higher, which are much higher than those extracted by D8 algorithm.
