Firstly, a point-based method is presented, adapting conventional assessment methods whereby common points between datasets are compared. In our approach, initial matches are established automatically and refined further through interactive editing. Second, a line-based method which uses correspondences between line segments is proposed. Here, the geometry of line segments in vector is transformed into a set of rasterized values so that their combination at each pixel can restore their original vector geometry. Matching is performed on rasterized line segments and their matching lengths and displacements are measured. Experimental results show that the line-based approach proposed is efficient to evaluate the geometric quality of spatial data without requirements of topological relationships among line features. [Termes IGN] trajectographie par GPSRésumé : (Auteur) Lidar (laser scanning) technology has been proven as a prominent technique for the acquisition of high-density and accurate topographic information. Because of systematic errors in the lidar measurements (drifts in the position and orientation information and biases in the mirror angles and ranges) and/or in the parameters relating the system components (mounting parameters), adjacent lidar strips may exhibit discrepancies. Although position and orientation drifts can have a more significant impact, these errors and their impact do not come as a surprise if the quality of the GPS/INS integration process is carefully examined. Therefore, the mounting errors are singled out in this work. The ideal solution for improving the compatibility of neighbouring strips in the presence of errors in the mounting parameters is the implementation of a rigorous calibration procedure. However, such a calibration requires the original observations, which may not be usually available. In this paper, a strip adjustment procedure to improve the compatibility between parallel lidar strips with moderate flight dynamics (for example, acquired by a fixed-wing aircraft) over an area with moderately varying elevation is proposed. The proposed method is similar to the photogrammetric block adjustment of independent models. Instead of point features, planar patches and linear features, which are represented by sets of non-conjugate points, are used for the strip adjustment. The feasibility and the performance of the proposed procedure together with its impact on subsequent activities are illustrated using experimental results from real data. [Termes IGN] symbole graphiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This paper discusses a novel methodology for multi-scale rendering of geographic features depending upon changes in visual scale. The methodology consists of geometry collapse and a symbol knowledge base. Two collapse algorithms are implemented: polygon to point and polygon to line. In particular, we develop a partial collapse algorithm for linear features. A river is represented by lines and polygons depending on the width. To render features with scale changes, a symbol knowledge base is designed to specify scale ranges and symbols for each feature. Finally, a multi-scale rendering tool is developed and applied to the map of Camp Lejune, NC. The symbols in the knowledge base can be accumulated and adapted for various mapping applications. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) In this study, the main theories, which were proposed in a PhD study completed at the Cartography Division of Istanbul Technical University, were presented. This study aimed to develop new approaches for covering the generalization based map design deficiencies of car navigation systems currently in use. For this purpose, commercial car navigation products were examined depending on the technologies that they used for map design. Optimization of the road network data and determination of the land use information of areal data were considered as the problems to be solved in this study and a route dependant generalization process was proposed to add value of current car navigation systems. This approach covered generalization processes applied on both areal and linear objects for optimizing the data presented at detailed level. Another approach, which determines the geometries of the road network interchanges and classifies them automatically, was also presented in this paper. This classification approach aimed to formalize interchanges efficiently to generalize them depending on the aim of the application. Two different methods that define interchanges mathematically were used in this context. Interchanges were defined as matrices and tree structures depending on the requirements of the navigating user in these methods.
