This popular web-based application provides accurate, reliable and consistent geodetic coordinates with minimal user input. A submitted GPS data file is usually processed within a few minutes and the computed coordinates are accurate to a few centimetres. [Termes IGN] téléphonie mobileRésumé : (Auteur) With the continuing advances in wireless communications, geo-positioning, and portable electronics, an infrastructure is emerging that enables the delivery of on-line, location-enabled services to very large numbers of mobile users. A typical usage situation for mobile services is one characterized by a small screen and no keyboard, and by the service being only a secondary focus of the user. Under such circumstances, it is particularly important to deliver the “right” information and service at the right time, with as little user interaction as possible. This may be achieved by making services context aware. Mobile users frequently follow the same route to a destination as they did during previous trips to the destination, and the route and destination constitute important aspects of the context for a range of services. This paper presents key concepts underlying a software component that identifies and accumulates the routes of a user along with their usage patterns and that makes the routes available to services. The problems associated with of route recording are analyzed, and algorithms that solve the problems are presented. Experiences from using the component on logs of GPS positions acquired from vehicles traveling within a real road network are reported. [Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (Auteur) Depuis 10 ou 15 ans, on s'interroge à savoir si les SIG sont des outils objectifs neutres ou s'ils servent les intérêts de l'état ou d'autres sociétés. Malgré les discussions à ce sujet, aucun consensus n'a encore été atteint à ce sujet, ce qui a amené certains chercheurs à explorer d'autres manières de contextualiser le développement des SIG, leur emploi et la recherche connexe.; Daniel Sui et Michael Goodchild sont deux des chercheurs qui se sont penchés sur cette question. Selon eux, les SIG sont des médias et, par conséquent, peuvent être étudiés à la lumière de la théorie des médias de Marshall McLuhan. Leurs résultats sont convaincants à grande échelle. Dans le présent article, nous nous basons sur leur travail pour appliquer ce concept à deux études de cas à petite échelle: une en Inde et l'autre au Minneapolis. Les résultats de cette analyse appuient ceux de Sui et Goodchild. Ainsi, l'utilisation d'un SIG comme média (a) souligne l'importance croissante des SIG en tant que formes modernes de communication ou de média; (b) montre aux concepteurs de SIG, à leurs utilisateurs et à ses opposants que les décisions basées sur les SIG peuvent influer sur des gens précis à la fois positivement et négativement; et (c) rappelle à la société et à la communauté liée aux SIG que des effets inverses à ceux attendus possibles lorsqu'on adopte des SIG ou des technologies que leur sont associées sans se questionner.
