SPOT4-Vegetafion 10-day composites from 1998 to 2000 were used for the generation of a cloud free sub-regional mosaic image. Pixel selection was based on minimum values in the short-wave (monthly composites) and near-infrared spectral bands (annual composites), providing a maximum discrimination between forest and non-forest. A forest cover map was derived from digital classification of the dataset. The classification result was validated by comparison with the interpretation of 19 Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) reference sites distributed over the sub-region. Forest area estimates were derived from the map and compared to Forest Resources Assessment 2000 data compiled by the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. Results show that the new coarse resolution satellite sensor can provide sufficient information for mapping of tropical forest cover at the regional and sub-regional level. [Termes IGN] occupation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Landsat TM and ETM data were used to create forest/non-forest maps with spatial patterns of forest fragmentation created by road building, agricultural colonisation and hydrocarbon exploration in Chapare (Bolivia) since the 1980s were analysed. Different spatial patterns of forest fragmentation were identified and analysed using landscape ecology metrics. These patterns are function of their deforestation histories which, in turn, can be explained by variety of Bolivian government policies. The relationships between landscape metrics and different simulated spatial resolutions of image data (from 30 to 1100) biodiversity conservation in humid tropical lowlands are considered. [Termes IGN] surveillance écologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The availability of hyperspectral data is going to provide new insights for environmental studies. In this study, hyperspectral data were collected for 10 land cover types with in situ measurement and leaves of 25 subtropical tree species in laboratory measurement within the 400 900 rim spectral regions in 689 bands. These bands were subsequently filtered to 138 bands for data analysis. Principal components analysis was applied to explore the inherent data dimensions. It was found that unlike most broadband sensors from which only two dimensions, brightness and greenness, could be extracted, hyperspectral data provided additional dimensions particularly along the red edge that could help identify different land covers as well as tree species. The results of tree identification using principal components analysis were comparable to those using the raw spectral bands. Hyperspectral data analysis should be a valuable tool for environmental monitoring in the tropical and subtropical environment where a large variety of flora and habitats is found.
