MESMA mapped fractional cover by testing endmember models of varying complexity. Based on OBIA, image was segmented at five segmentation scales followed by classification. MESMA provided more accurate fractional cover estimates than OBIA. The increasing segmentation scale in OBIA resulted in a consistent increase in error. Different vegetation morphology types showed varied responses to the changing segmentation scale, reflecting their unique ecology and physiognomy. While areas under woody cover produced lower error even at coarse segmentation scales, those with herbaceous cover provided low error only at the fine segmentation scale. [Termes IGN] qualité des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Digital surface models (DSMs) extracted from 15 different stereo pairs attained by the combination of GeoEye-1 (GE1) and WorldView-2 (WV2) panchromatic very high resolution (VHR) satellite images are tested. Two of them are pure same-date along-track stereo pairs, one from each VHR satellite, whereas the rest are mixed multidate across-track ones. A quality assessment on the DSMs extracted from the aforementioned stereo pairs, involving both accuracy and completeness, is carried out. Several factors are tested such as sensor model used in the bundle adjustment, number of ground control points (GCPs), radiometric characteristics, satellite imaging geometry, time between acquisition dates, and target land cover. A highly accurate light detection and ranging elevation data is used as ground truth. Overall, 3-D rational functions refined by a zero-order polynomial adjustment by using 7 or 12 GCPs performed slightly better regarding both DSM vertical accuracy and completeness. In relation to the pure stereo pairs, the DSM extracted from the GE1 stereo pair attained better vertical accuracy over the whole study area (90th percentile linear error, LE90, of 2.04 m) but lower completeness (74.50%) than the WV2 one (2.56 m and 83.35%, respectively). The undergoing hypothesis is that the blurrier images from WV2 could have influenced in the improvement of the matching success rate while reducing the vertical accuracy of extracted points. When all the 15 stereo pairs are considered, the vertical accuracy mainly depends on the convergence angle. In addition, the temporal difference between acquisition dates turned out to be the most influential factor regarding completeness values. [Termes IGN] surface cultivéeRésumé : (auteur) Agricultural practices and spatial arrangements of fields have a strong impact on water flows in cultivated landscapes. In order to monitor landscapes at a large scale, there is a strong need for automatic or semi-automatic field delineation. Field measurements for delineating parcel network are not efficient, thus very high resolution satellite imagery should help delineating agricultural fields in a automatic way. This study focuses on agricultural field delineation based on the classification of very high resolution satellite imagery. A hybrid approach is proposed and combines a region-based approach and active learning (AL) techniques. Random forest (RF) classifier is used for classification and feature selection. The margin concept is used as uncertainty measure in active learning algorithm. Satisfying results are shown on a Geoeye image. AL RF model is compared to simple and global RF models that are built from adjacent and geographically distant fields respectively. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) In this study, we propose a novel methodology for automated detection of buildings from single very-high-resolution (VHR) multispectral images. The methodology uses the principal evidence of buildings: the shadows that they cast. We model the directional spatial relationship between buildings and their shadows using a recently proposed probabilistic landscape approach. An effective shadow post-processing step is developed to focus on landscapes that belong to building regions. The building regions are detected using an original two-level graph theory approach. In the first level, each shadow region is addressed separately, and building regions are identified via iterative graph cuts designed in two-label partitioning. The final building regions are characterised in a second level in which the previously labelled building regions are subjected to a single-step multi-label graph optimisation performed over the entire image domain. Numerical assessments performed on 16 VHR GeoEye-1 images demonstrate that the proposed approach is highly robust and reliable. A distinctive specialty of the proposed approach is its applicability to buildings with diverse characteristics as well as to VHR images with significantly different illumination properties.
