[Termes IGN] structure-from-motionRésumé : (Auteur) Recent developments in low-cost structure-from-motion (SfM) technologies offer new opportunities for geoscientists to acquire high-resolution soil microtopography data at a fraction of the cost of conventional techniques. However, these new methodologies often lack easily accessible error metrics and hence are difficult to evaluate. In this research, a framework was developed to evaluate a SfM approach for soil microtopography measurement through assessment of uncertainty sources and quantification of their potential impact on overall 3D reconstruction. Standard deviations of camera interior orientation parameters estimated from SfM self-calibration within five different soil surface models were several orders of magnitude larger than precisions expected from pattern-based camera calibration. Sensitivity analysis identified the principal point position as the dominant source of calibration-induced uncertainty. Overall, surface elevation values estimated from both technologies were similar in magnitude with a root mean square (RMS) of elevation difference of 0·2 mm. Nevertheless, the presence of deformation in either SfM or traditional photogrammetric point clouds highlights the importance of quality assurance safeguards (such as a judicious choice of control points) in SfM workflows for soil microtopography applications. [Termes IGN] prévention des risquesRésumé : (Auteur) Coastal chalk cliff falls in Upper Normandy (France) are frequent and have specific spatial and temporal distributions. From 2002 to 2009, the ESTRAN organization (Scientific and Technical Space of Aquatic Resources and Navigation) conducted a weekly inventory of 331 cliff falls (location, volume, and date) between Veules-les-Roses and Le Treport (37.5 km). An amount of 331 falls was counted (date, location, measures of fall deposit). This database is remarkable because of the duration and high frequency of field surveys. The geographical and spatial statistics (locational analysis) methods used in this study aim to determine and understand the spatial and temporal distributions of coastal chalk cliff falls. Exhaustive cartography of such falls thus highlights the cap d’Ailly sector as being the most sensitive to an erosive dynamic along the coast from Veules-les-Roses to Le Treport. Furthermore, this cartography stresses many types of fall kinematics. This can be partly explained by lithological characteristics may predispose mass and particle movements. Using the combination of centrographic statistics, Ripley’s K-function, Besag’s L-function and kernel density, we have identified: 1) high cliff fall polarization at cap d’Ailly; 2) organization scales of fall locations per water year; 3) areas of massive and numerous falls (fall hazard areas). This information is essential for a better understanding of the working of the studied area and also for the set up of risk prevention tools. [Termes IGN] sédimentationRésumé : (auteur) The accurate assessment of soil erosion in the spatial environment can give valuable input in designing reservoirs and for preparing watershed management action plans. Rangit River in northeastern India is affected by severe soil erosion, causing reduction in its reservoir capacity. The main aim of the paper is to estimate the soil erosion in the Rangit catchment, India through a process-based soil erosion model that integrates remote sensing and field data in the geospatial domain, and also to identify the problem areas for further watershed management action plans. Various topographic parameters that were derived from land use, soil texture and a digital elevation model were used for the estimation of soil erosion. The Morgan, Morgan and Finny model was used to compute soil erosion. Based on the drainage pattern, the catchment was divided into eight sub-catchments for detailed study. Annual soil erosion was estimated for four years from 2002 to 2005 using the corresponding year’s meteorological data. Estimated soil erosion was compared with the field data in each year and found very good correlation. [Termes IGN] Viet NamRésumé : (Auteur) This paper shows the research of coastal morphological changes in Red river delta using Remote Sensing and GIS technique. Study was carried out to assess the intensity of erosion, deposition and sand bar movement in the study area. Satellite images of ALOS/AVNIR-2 and Landsat MSS, TM, ETM+ were used for the monitoring of coastal morphological changes over the period of 1975 to 2009. Band rationing and threshold technique was used for the coastline extraction. Tidal levels at the time of image acquisition varied from 1.47m to 2.72. Therefore, coastline from another image at a different tidal level in the same year was considered to get the corrected coastline by interpolation technique. A series of points were generated along the coastline from 1975 image and were established as reference points to see the change in later periods. The changes were measured in distances from these reference points to the other coastline. Positive values represented deposition to the sea and negative values are erosion. The research showed that maximum erosion was 23.77 m/y between 1975 and 1989 in GiaoThuy, Nam Dinh area.
Human activities, such as shrimp farming and mangrove cultivation have expanded land nearly 3.5 km in Red river mouth and 2.8 km in Thai Binh river mouth from 1975 to 2009. The sand bar movement of the deltas were characterized by their alternating location of coastline, rate of deposition and erosion. In the analysis, sand bars were converted into centerlines for calculation. It was found that the sand bars moved 186 in/year in Red river mouth and 195 m/year in Day river mouth.
