[Termes IGN] sédimentationRésumé : (Auteur) The advent of satellite remote sensing has provided a huge opportunity to geomorphologists to study the temporal dynamics of large rivers. The repetitive coverage of satellite data is an important archive to reconstruct historical-scale dynamics of large rivers and to understand the causal factors. In the lower reaches of the Ganga River around Farakka, natural as well as anthropogenic factors have influenced large-scale dynamics of the river during the last 234 years. The construction of the Farakka barrage was started in 1961 and was completed in 1971 except the feeder canal. The barrage was finally commissioned in 1975 but the serious problems of aggradation both upstream and downstream of the barrage had started much earlier resulting in significant changes in channel morphology and position. The channel upstream of the Farakka barrage has moved towards the east but channel shifting downstream of the Farakka barrage has been erratic. We argue that sedimentological readjustments due to aggradation and bar growth are the major factors influencing the river dynamics in this region. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a cell-based approach for computing the deformation of a monitored object by analyzing point cloud data from terrestrial lidar. This approach can automatically generate an informative deformation description (called “deformation map”) with distinctive deformation characteristics for different partial areas. The approach consists of three major computing steps: (a) “split” - the space of the monitored object is divided into 3D uniform cells, (b) “detect” - deformation parameters for each cell (called “meta-deformation”) are estimated by comparing the point clouds in the cell sampled at Epochs I and II, and (c) “merge” - the adjacent cells with similar meta-deformation are combined together in a partial area with a consistent “sub-deformation.” The main contributions of this paper are: (a) a hybrid deformation model for incremental and comprehensive deformation representation, including metadeformation, sub-deformation and deformation map, (b) a systematic procedure of “split-detect-merge” to automatically and gradually estimate the hybrid deformation model, and (c) a complete validation with a couple of synthetic and real datasets. [Termes IGN] trait de côteRésumé : (Auteur) This study compares two automated approaches, the transect-from-baseline technique and a new change polygon method, for quantifying historical coastal change over time. The study shows that the transect-from-baseline technique is complicated by choice of a proper baseline as well as generating transects that intersect with each other rather than with the nearest shoreline. The change polygon method captures the full spatial difference between the positions of the two shorelines and average coastal change is the defined as the ratio of the net area divided by the shoreline length. Although then change polygon method is sensitive to the definition and measurement of shoreline length, the results are more invariant to parameter changes than the transect-from-baseline method, suggesting that the change polygon technique may be a more robust coastal change method.
