[Termes IGN] vent de sableRésumé : (auteur) Sand dune migration poses a potential threat to desert infrastructure, vegetation, and atmospheric conditions. Capturing the patterns of long-term dune migration is useful for predicting probable desertification issues and wind conditions across vast desert areas. In this study, we employed optical image matching and a singular value decomposition approach to estimate the rates of dune migration in the North Sinai Sand Sea using the free Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2 archives. Our optical image matching time-series selection and inversion (OPTSI) algorithm limited the difference in the solar illumination of correlated pairs to decrease shadows and seasonal variability. We found that the maximum annual dune migration rates were 9.4 m/a and 15.9 m/a for Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2 data, respectively, and the results of time-series analysis revealed the existence of seasonal variations in dune migration controlled by wind regimes. The directions of sand movement extracted from the mean velocity solution agreed strongly with each other and with the drift directions estimated using wind data from meteorological stations. We assessed the uncertainty of each solution based on the variance of stable areas. Our results showed that the proposed inversion decreased uncertainty by up to 25% and increased the spatial coverage by up to 20%. This algorithm is also promising for the retrieval of historical time series on the ground displacements of glaciers and slow-moving landslides employing free archives that provide high-frequency images. [Termes IGN] zone tamponRésumé : (auteur) Intertidal flats lying as a buffer zone between land and sea provide critical services including protection against storm surges and coastal flooding. These environments are characterized by a continuous redistribution of sediment and changes in topography. Sea level rise, anthropogenic pressures, and their related stressors have a considerable impact on these areas and are expected to put them under more stress; hence the increased need for frequent and updated topography maps. Comparing to traditional surveying approaches, spaceborne remote sensing is able to provide topography maps more frequently with a lower cost and a higher coverage. The latter is currently considered as an established tool for measuring intertidal topography. In this study, an improved approach of the waterline method was developed to derive intertidal Digital Elevation Models (DEMs). The changes include a faster, more efficient and quasi-automatic detection and post-processing of waterlines. The edge detection technique consists in combining a k-means based segmentation and an active contouring procedure. This method was designed to generate closed contours in order to enable an automatization of the post-processing of the extracted waterlines. The waterlines were extracted from Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 images for two bays located on the French Coast: the Arcachon lagoon and the Bay of Veys. DEMs were generated for the Arcachon Bay between 2015 and 2018, and for the Bay of Veys between 2016 and 2018 using satellite acquisitions made during summer (low storm activity period). The comparison of the generated DEMs with lidar observations showed an error of about 19–25 cm. This study also demonstrated that the waterline method applied to Sentinel images is suitable for monitoring the morpho-sedimentary evolution in intertidal areas. By comparing the DEMs generated between 2016 and 2018, the Arcachon Bay and the Bay of Veys experienced net volume losses of 1.12 × 106 m3 and 0.70 × 106 m3 respectively. The generated DEMs provide useful and needed information for several scientific applications (e.g., sediment balance, hydrodynamic modelling), but also for authorities and stakeholders for coastal management and implementation of ecosystem protection policies. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (auteur) Gully erosion is one of the main processes of soil degradation, representing 50%–90% of total erosion at basin scales. Thus, its precise characterization has received growing attention in recent years. Geomatics techniques, mainly photogrammetry and LiDAR, can support the quantitative analysis of gully development. This paper deals with the application of these techniques using aerial photographs and airborne LiDAR data available from public database servers to identify and quantify gully erosion through a long period (1980–2016) in an area of 7.5 km2 in olive groves. Several historical flights (1980, 1996, 2001, 2005, 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2016) were aligned in a common coordinate reference system with the LiDAR point cloud, and then, digital surface models (DSMs) and orthophotographs were obtained. Next, the analysis of the DSM of differences (DoDs) allowed the identification of gullies, the calculation of the affected areas as well as the estimation of height differences and volumes between models. These analyses result in an average depletion of 0.50 m and volume loss of 85000 m3 in the gully area, with some periods (2009–2011 and 2011–2013) showing rates of 10,000–20,000 m3/year (20–40 t/ha*year). The manual edition of DSMs in order to obtain digital elevation models (DTMs) in a detailed sector has facilitated an analysis of the influence of this operation on the erosion calculations, finding that it is not significant except in gully areas with a very steep shape. [Termes IGN] sismicitéRésumé : (Auteur) The efficient assessment of convolved hidden Markov models is discussed. The bottom layer is defined as an unobservable categorical first-order Markov chain, whereas the middle layer is assumed to be a Gaussian spatial variable conditional on the bottom layer. Hence, this layer appears marginally as a Gaussian mixture spatial variable. We observe the top layer as a convolution of the middle layer with Gaussian errors. The focus is on assessing the categorical and Gaussian mixture variables given the observations, and we operate in a Bayesian inversion framework. The model is defined to perform the inversion of subsurface seismic amplitude-versus-offset data into lithology/fluid classes and to assess the associated seismic material properties. Due to the spatial coupling in the likelihood functions, evaluation of the posterior normalizing constant is computationally demanding, and brute-force, single-site updating Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithms converge far too slowly to be useful. We construct two classes of approximate posterior models, which we assess analytically and efficiently using the recursive forward–backward algorithm. These approximate posterior densities are used as proposal densities in an independent proposal MCMC algorithm to determine the correct posterior model. A set of synthetic realistic examples is presented. The proposed approximations provide efficient proposal densities, which results in acceptance probabilities in the range 0.10–0.50 in the MCMC algorithm. A case study of lithology/fluid seismic inversion is presented. The lithology/fluid classes and the seismic material properties can be reliably predicted.
