[Termes IGN] teneur totale en électronsRésumé : (éditeur) [...] In this month’s column, we take a look at the use of a smartphone app to collect GNSS ionospheric data. Why would you want to do that? In the experience of the developers of the app, GNSS receivers are often characterized by a complex, proprietary data interface that differs for each manufacturer. In practice, this leads to significant investments in understanding interfaces and software tools. Human operators must familiarize themselves with the commands used to configure each receiver as well as with proprietary graphical user interfaces and tools specific to each receiver. The authors’ app-centric approach provides a software framework and output format that remain the same for different receivers. Receiver-specific commands are configurable within the app, so users can easily attach new receivers while reusing the existing infrastructures for data collection and processing. And smartphones have more than enough power and connectivity to do the job and can be easily moved from site to site. The smartphone as a handheld device to help scientists study the ionosphere? Probably not even Clive Sinclair foresaw that. [Termes IGN] teneur totale en électronsRésumé : (auteur) Single frequency code and single frequency code and phase GPS precise point positioning scenarios using various ionospheric sources are evaluated by assessing their performances with respect to dual frequency solutions. These include Canadian regional and global vertical total electron content (VTEC) maps produced by Natural Resources Canada and different International GNSS Service (IGS) coordination or analysis centres. Furthermore, two of the most commonly used single layer ionospheric mapping functions applied for conversion of VTEC to slant TEC are evaluated with each and every one of the ionospheric VTEC sources. Results show that the quality of code only solutions depends on ionospheric activity level, and the TEC map and mapping function selected. Code and phase single frequency solutions are also improved when assisted with an external ionosphere source. [Termes IGN] station de référenceRésumé : (auteur) Accurate water level elevations are imperative for water resource management. This paper presents the outcomes of a research study using GPS in measuring water level heights. The authors observed the water elevations of several wells, United States Geological Survey (USGS) gauges and acequia points at three different locations in North–Central New Mexico, USA. Different rapid static and static observation sessions were collected independently and adjusted using the nearby reference control stations. The authors used two different sets of receivers: four Topcon Hiper Lite+ and two Leica GPS1200 The authors were able to examine several network configurations with different continuously operating reference station (CORS) stations. Our findings were analogous to empirically expected errors and showed insignificant differences among the heights obtained from rapid static and static sessions at a 95% confidence level. The authors also compared the results with National Geodetic Survey online positioning users service (NGS OPUS) solutions and confirmed the accuracy of our measurements. As independent measurement technique, we measured the height differences among several of these points with conventional levelling surveys. Our GPS measurements provided small disagreements with height differences obtained with the terrestrial surveys, after the GPS heights were reduced to their orthometric correspondences. Based on these findings, current rapid static GPS positioning methodologies are capable of providing equivalent accuracies as those obtained by static GPS and ground surveying techniques. [Vedettes matières IGN] Traitement de données GNSSRésumé : (Auteur) We provide a comprehensive overview of pseudorange biases and their dependency on receiver front-end bandwidth and correlator design. Differences in the chip shape distortions among GNSS satellites are the cause of individual pseudorange biases. The different biases must be corrected for in a number of applications, such as positioning with mixed signals or PPP with ambiguity resolution. Current state-of-the-art is to split the pseudorange bias into a receiver- and a satellite-dependent part. As soon as different receivers with different front-end bandwidths or correlator designs are involved, the satellite biases differ between the receivers and this separation is no longer practicable. A test with a special receiver firmware, which allows tracking a satellite with a range of different correlator spacings, has been conducted with live signals as well as a signal simulator. In addition, the variability of satellite biases is assessed through zero-baseline tests with different GNSS receivers using live satellite signals. The receivers are operated with different settings for multipath mitigation, and the changes in the satellite-dependent biases depending on the receivers’ configuration are observed.
