[Termes IGN] tomographieRésumé : (auteur) The electron density structures of the seismo-traveling ionospheric disturbances (STIDs) during the Tohoku earthquake are reconstructed by applying the three-dimensional computerized ionospheric tomography (3DCIT) technique with a 30-s time resolution for the first time. The vertical distribution of 3DCIT results is consistent with the constellation observing system for meteorology, ionosphere and climate (COSMIC) observations. The horizontal speeds of STIDs at different altitudes are estimated, and the three types of STIDs related to Rayleigh waves, acoustic waves and gravity waves are identified by their propagation characters. The magnitude of STIDs related to Rayleigh waves decreased with altitude, and there was no significant difference between the speeds (~ 2500 m/s) at different altitudes. The STIDs caused by acoustic waves traveled faster at 300 km altitude (~ 666–724 m/s) than at 150 km altitude (~ 500–550 m/s). From 150 to 250 km altitudes, in the STIDs induced by gravity waves, the magnitude of positive and negative wave fronts showed the opposite trend. The speed at 300 km altitude (~ 332 m/s) was slightly larger than at 150 km altitude (~ 310 m/s). The Rayleigh waves related STIDs showed a conic-like geometry, whereas the acoustic waves and gravity waves induced STIDs showed inverted conic-like geometries. The possible propagation mechanisms of different types of STIDs are also discussed. Prior to impending earthquake, physical and chemical interactions in the earth’s crust lead to anomalous variations of air temperature (AT). Satellite based remote sensing method allows to determine earthquake precursors over a large tectonic area. Buildup of stresses in a seismically active area manifests as thermal anomaly. In the present study, variations in AT prior to eastern Turkey, Bella Bella (Canada) and Pocito (Argentina) earthquakes were studied by utilizing multi-year background data. The analysis shows strong anomalous variations of AT prior to the seismic events with the highest AT values recorded before the earthquakes. Anomaly plots show that the release of energy was concentrated in the region along epicenter. Descriptive statistics of AT for the earthquakes show significant changes prior to the seismic event. Degassing of gases occur during rock micro-fracturing, which results in air ionization, thereby resulting in AT precursory anomalies. [Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (auteur) The April 25, 2015 Mw 7.9 Gorkha earthquake in Nepal was characterized by a peak slip of several meters and persisting aftershocks. We report here that, in addition, a dense seismic swarm initiated abruptly in August 2017 at the western edge of the afterslip region, below the high Himalchuli-Manaslu range culminating at 8156 m, a region seismically inactive during the past 35 years. Over 6500 events were recorded by the Nepal National Seismological Network with local magnitude ranging between 1.8 and 3.7 until November 2017. This swarm was reactivated between April and July 2018, with about 10 times less events than in 2017, and in 2019 with only sporadic events. The relocation of swarm earthquakes using proximal temporary stations ascertains a shallow depth of hypocenters between the surface and 20 km depth in the High Himalayan Crystalline slab. This swarm reveals an intriguing localized interplay between orogenic collapse and stress adjustments, involving possibly CO2-rich fluid migration, more likely post-seismic slip and seasonal enhancements. [Termes IGN] tsunamiRésumé : (auteur) Earth observation (EO) technologies, such as optical imaging and synthetic aperture radar (SAR), provide excellent means to continuously monitor ever-growing urban environments. Notably, in the case of large-scale disasters (e.g., tsunamis and earthquakes), in which a response is highly time-critical, images from both data modalities can complement each other to accurately convey the full damage condition in the disaster aftermath. However, due to several factors, such as weather and satellite coverage, which data modality will be the first available for rapid disaster response efforts is often uncertain. Hence, novel methodologies that can utilize all accessible EO datasets are essential for disaster management. In this study, we developed a global multimodal and multitemporal dataset for building damage mapping. We included building damage characteristics from three disaster types, namely, earthquakes, tsunamis, and typhoons, and considered three building damage categories. The global dataset contains high-resolution (HR) optical imagery and high-to-moderate-resolution SAR data acquired before and after each disaster. Using this comprehensive dataset, we analyzed five data modality scenarios for damage mapping: single-mode (optical and SAR datasets), cross-modal (pre-disaster optical and post-disaster SAR datasets), and mode fusion scenarios. We defined a damage mapping framework for semantic segmentation of damaged buildings based on a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) algorithm. We also compared our approach to another state-of-the-art model for damage mapping. The results indicated that our dataset, together with a deep learning network, enabled acceptable predictions for all the data modality scenarios. We also found that the results from cross-modal mapping were comparable to the results obtained from a fusion sensor and optical mode analysis.
