[Termes IGN] terrasseRésumé : (auteur) Agricultural terraces are important for agricultural production and soil-and-water conservation. They comprise treads and risers that require manual construction and maintenance. If managed improperly, risers will collapse, causing soil loss, gully erosion, and cultivation threats. However, mapping terrace risers remains a challenge. This study presents a novel approach to automatically map terrace risers by combining remote sensing images and digital elevation models (DEMs). First, a terraced hillslope was extracted via a hill-shading method and edges in the image were detected using a Canny edge detector. Next, the DEM was used to generate the contour direction, and edges along this direction were searched and coded as candidate terrace risers via directional detection. Finally, the results of directional detection and the edge image obtained from the Canny detector were overlaid to backtrack complete terrace risers. The approach was validated using four study areas with different topographic characteristics in the Loess Plateau, China. The results verify that the approach achieves outstanding performance and robustness in mapping terrace risers. The precision, recall, and F-measure were 90.81%–97.57%, 88.53%–94.10%, and 90.13%–95.80%, respectively. This approach is flexible and applicable with freely available images and DEM sources. [Termes IGN] web mappingRésumé : (auteur) Open government promises increased transparency by providing its citizens datasets about city processes. Open data portals have been emerging all over the world as mines of open geographic datasets. Thematic web maps are key to understanding these open geographic datasets. Current thematic web maps are created by programmers and/or cartographers, and thus are not designed to be easily reused with new geographic datasets. As a result, they pose several challenges to non-experts wanting to adapt them to new scenarios. This article introduces a semi-automatic approach for the creation of thematic web maps by and for users with no prior training in cartography. The approach relies on the mapping between Stevens’ data types and Bertin’s visual variables, to suggest (meaningful) thematic map visualizations for a given input geographic dataset. It was implemented as a web prototype in AngularJS and evaluated with 19 participants. Results from the user study suggest that despite facing a few challenges in accurately identifying Stevens’ data types, participants managed to successfully create web maps and correctly answer spatial questions. The prototype and insights gathered from the user study are relevant to making cartographic products more accessible to a broader population, and open geographic data more usable in the context of an open government. Note de contenu :

The processing of this huge amount of information, including spatial properties, which are frequently represented in heterogeneous ways, is a challenging task that has boosted research in the big data area in an attempt to investigate cases and propose new solutions for dealing with its peculiarities. In the literature, many different proposals and approaches for facing the problem have been proposed, addressing different goals and different types of users. However, most are obtained by customizing existing approaches which were originally developed for the processing of big data of the alphanumeric type, without any specific support for spatial or spatiotemporal properties. Thus, the proposed solutions can exploit the parallelism provided by these kinds of systems, but without taking into account, in a proficient way, the space and time dimensions that intrinsically characterize the analyzed datasets. As described in the literature, current solutions include: (i) the on-top approach, where an underlying system for traditional big datasets is used as a black box while spatial processing is added through the definition of user-defined functions that are specified on top of the underlying system; (ii) the from-scratch approach, where a completely new system is implemented for a specific application context; and (iii) the built-in approach, where an existing solution is extended by injecting spatial data functions into its core. This book aims at promoting new and innovative studies, proposing new architectures or innovative evolutions of existing ones, and illustrating experiments on current technologies in order to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of distributed and cluster systems when they deal with spatiotemporal data.
