[Termes IGN] système de numérisation mobileRésumé : (auteur) GNSS/INS applications are being developed, especially for direct georeferencing in airborne photogrammetry. Achieving accurately georeferenced products from the integration of GNSS and INS requires removing systematic errors in the mobile mapping systems. The INS sensor's uncertainty is decreasing; therefore, the influence of the deflection of verticals (DOV, the angle between the plumb line and normal to the ellipsoid) should be considered in the direct georeferencing. Otherwise, an error is imposed for calculating the exterior orientation parameters of the aerial images and aerial laser scanning. This study determines the DOV using the EGM2008 model and gravity data in Sweden. The impact of the DOVs on horizontal and vertical coordinates, considering different flight altitudes and camera field of view, is assessed. The results confirm that the calculated DOV components using the EGM2008 model are sufficiently accurate for aerial mapping system purposes except for mountainous areas because the topographic signal is not modelled correctly. [Termes IGN] vision par ordinateurRésumé : (auteur) Key-frame selection methods were developed in the past years to reduce the complexity of frame processing in visual odometry (VO) and visual simultaneous localization and mapping (VSLAM) algorithms. Key-frames help increasing algorithm's performances by sparsifying frames while maintaining its accuracy and robustness. Unlike current selection methods that rely on many heuristic thresholds to decide which key-frame should be selected, this paper proposes a photogrammetric-based key-frame selection method built upon ORB-SLAM3. The proposed algorithm, named Photogrammetric Key-frame Selection (PKS), replaces static heuristic thresholds with photogrammetric principles, ensuring algorithm’s robustness and better point cloud quality. A key-frame is chosen based on adaptive thresholds and the Equilibrium Of Center Of Gravity (ECOG) criteria as well as Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) observations. To evaluate the proposed PKS method, the European Robotics Challenge (EuRoC) and an in-house datasets are used. Quantitative and qualitative evaluations are made by comparing trajectories, point clouds quality and completeness and Absolute Trajectory Error (ATE) in mono-inertial and stereo-inertial modes. Moreover, for the generated dense point clouds, extensive evaluations, including plane-fitting error, model deformation, model alignment error, and model density and quality, are performed. The results show that the proposed algorithm improves ORB-SLAM3 positioning accuracy by 18% in stereo-inertial mode and 20% in mono-inertial mode without the use of heuristic thresholds, as well as producing a more complete and accurate point cloud up to 50%. [Termes IGN] SuèdeRésumé : (Auteur) More accurate snow quality predictions are needed to economically and socially support communities in a changing Arctic environment. This contrasts with the current availability of affordable and efficient snow monitoring methods. In this study, a novel approach is presented to determine spatial snow depth distribution in challenging alpine terrain that was tested during a field campaign performed in the Tarfala valley, Kebnekaise mountains, northern Sweden, in April 2019. The combination of a multispectral camera and an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) was used to derive three-dimensional (3D) snow surface models via Structure from Motion (SfM) with direct georeferencing. The main advantage over conventional photogrammetric surveys is the utilization of accurate Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) positioning which enables direct georeferencing of the images, and therefore eliminates the need for ground control points. The proposed method is capable of producing high-resolution 3D snow-covered surface models (7 cm/pixel) of alpine areas up to eight hectares in a fast, reliable and affordable way. The test sites’ average snow depth was 160 cm with an average standard deviation of 78 cm. The overall Root-Mean-Square Errors (RMSE) of the snow depth range from 11.52 cm for data acquired in ideal surveying conditions to 41.03 cm in aggravated light and wind conditions. Results of this study suggest that the red components in the electromagnetic spectrum, i.e., the red, red edge, and near-infrared (NIR) band, contain the majority of information used in photogrammetric processing. The experiments highlighted a significant influence of the multi-spectral imagery on the quality of the final snow depth estimation as well as a strong potential to reduce processing times and computational resources by limiting the dimensionality of the imagery through the application of a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) before the photogrammetric 3D reconstruction. The proposed method is part of closing the scale gap between discrete point measurements and regional-scale remote sensing and complements large-scale remote sensing data and snow model output with an adequate validation source. [Termes IGN] zone d'intérêtRésumé : (auteur) During the last two decades, UAV emerged as standard platform for photogrammetric data collection. Main motivation in that early phase was the cost effective airborne image collection at areas of limited size. This was already feasible by rather simple payloads like an off-the-shelf, compact camera and a navigation-grade GNSS sensor. Meanwhile, dedicated sensor systems enable applications that have not been feasible in the past. One example is the airborne collection of dense 3D point clouds at millimetre accuracies, which will be discussed in our paper. For this purpose, we collect both LiDAR and image data from a joint UAV platform and apply a so-called hybrid georeferencing. This process integrates photogrammetric bundle block adjustment with direct georeferencing of LiDAR point clouds. By these means georeferencing accuracy is improved for the LiDAR point cloud by an order of magnitude. We demonstrate the feasibility of our approach in the context of a project, which aims on monitoring of subsidence of about 10 mm/year. The respective area of interest is defined by a ship lock and its vicinity of mixed use. In that area, multiple UAV flights were captured and evaluated for a period of three years. As our main contribution, we demonstrate that 3D point accuracies at sub-centimetre level can be achieved. This is realized by joint orientation of laser scans and images in a hybrid adjustment framework, which enables accuracies corresponding to the GSD of the captured imagery. Such large-scale 3D data capturing can be conducted effectively by combining structure-from-motion and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). Using a RTK-GNSS equipped UAV, 22 repeated weekly campaigns were conducted at two altitudes in various conditions. The photogrammetric approach yielded 3D models, which were compared to the terrestrial laser scanning based ground truth. Better than 2.8 cm geometry RMSE was consistently achieved using integrated georeferencing. It is concluded that the RTK-GNSS based georeferencing enables reaching better than 5 cm geometry accuracy by utilising at least one ground control point.
