[Termes IGN] variogrammeRésumé : (Auteur) Global temporal composites of surface reflectances are among the most commonly used products of wide field-of-view satellite-borne instruments such as the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR). the MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and VEGETATION. The multi-temporal and spatial consistencies of these composites are key elements for their usefulness. In this paper, we use two different criteria to evaluate the quality of existing and new temporal composite products in SPOT-VEGETATION imagery. The first criterion based on variograms. analyses the spatial characteristics of composite images, and the second one evaluates the quality of the time series based on the analysis of simultaneous imagery from VEGETATION 1 and VEGETATION 2. Thanks to these criteria, we show that the standard deviation of the errors that affect the surface reflectances of current composite products can be reduced by a factor greater than 2 using improved algorithms detailed in this paper. Finally, we produce multi- instrument composites by integrating images from both VEGETATION instruments to further improve the composite products. [Termes IGN] variogrammeRésumé : (Auteur) Kriging is a widely employed method for interpolating and estimating elevations from digital elevation data. Its place of prominence is due to its elegant theoretical foundation and its convenient practical implementation. From an interpolation point of view, kriging is equivalent to a thin -plate spline and is one species among the many in the genus of weighted inverse distance methods, albeit with attractive properties. However, from a statistical point of view, kriging is a best linear unbiased estimator and, consequently, has a place of distinction among all spatial estimators because any other linear estimator that performs as well as kriging ( in the least squares sense) must be equivalent to kriging, assuming that the parmeters of the semivariogram are known. Therefore, kriging is often held to be gold standard of digital terrain model estimation. However, i prove that, when used with local support, kriging creates discontinuous digital terrain models, which is to say, surfaces with "rips" and "tears" throughout them. This results is generaly ; it is true for ordinary kriging with a trend, and other forms. A U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) digital elevation model was analyzed to characterize the distribution of the discontinuities. I show that the magnitude of the discontinuity does not depend on surface gradient but is strongly dependant on the size of the kriging neighborhood. [Termes IGN] variogrammeRésumé : (Auteur) This paper explores the use of quadtree segmentation of a land-cover map to improve error modelling by (1) accounting for variation in classification accuracy among differently sized homogeneous map regions and (2) improving the statistical properties of map realizations generated by sequential indicator simulation (SIS). The latter was accomplished by locating the first simulation nodes -which affect many subsequent local simulations- within the largest quadtree leaves. These represent the largest homogeneous and hypothetically most accurately classified areas on the map. A case study showed that, indeed, the overall accuracy of the land-cover map increased with the quadtree leaf size, ranging from 67% for single cells in heterogeneous areas to 98% for homogeneous blocks of 256 cells. A map of the prior probability of each land-cover class was prepared on the basis of quadtree level-specific confusion matrices. Next, two unconditional SIS algorithms were used to generate sets of 50 realizations of the map, thereby accounting for spatial continuity of the residuals between indicator-transformed reference data and the priors. The proposed quadtree-guided SIS outperformed the more common multiple-steps method as judged by the reproduction of target proportions of map categories, class-specific accuracy levels and variogram reproduction. [Termes IGN] variogrammeRésumé : (Auteur) Differential Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) interferometric (D-InSAR) data of ground surface deformation are affected by several error sources associated with image acquisitions and data processing. In this paper, we study the use of D-InSAR for quantifying land subsidence due to groundwater extraction. We model the data as the sum of a trend, a zeromean stochastic process and white noise. A geostatistical approach combines D-InSAR subsidence data with in situ levelling measurements. The objective of this paper is to correct the errors contained in the D-InSAR measurements by using measurements as the ground data to improve their accuracy. Discrepancies between the true subsidence values and original D-InSAR measurements are analysed at levelling points using variograms and predicted at unvisited points using kriging. The integrated measurements are obtained by subtracting the predicted errors from the original D-InSAR measurements. The proposed method is applied to data collected in the Tianjin (China) area where land subsidence occurs due to groundwater extraction. Results demonstrate the capability of the D-InSAR technique for detecting subsidence at the centimetre level, and of using a limited number of levelling points to improve the accuracy of D-InSAR deformation measurements provided the coherence of images used is high enough. Discrepancies between the true subsidence values and D-InSAR measurements are quantified using the root mean square error (RMSE). RMSE for the original data was equal to 2.8, and 0.8 for the integrated data, whereas the mean error was equal to 2.1 and 0.0, respectively.
