[Termes IGN] VRMLRésumé : (Auteur) This paper describes an integrated approach to the construction of textured 3D scene models of building interiors from laser range data and visual images. This approach has been implemented in a collection of algorithms and sensors within a prototype device for 3D reconstruction, known as the EST (Environmental Sensor for Telepresence). The EST can take the form of a push trolley or of an autonomous mobile platform. The Autonomous EST (AEST) has been designed to provide an integrated solution for automating the creation of complete models. Embedded software performs several functions, including triangulation of the range data, registration of video texture, registration and integration of data acquired from different capture points. Potential applications include facilities management for the construction industry and creating reality models to be used in general areas of virtual reality, for example, virtual studios, virtualised reality for content-related applications (e.g., CD-ROMs), social telepresence, architecture and others. The paper presents the main components of the EST/AEST, and presents some example results obtained from the prototypes. The reconstructed model is encoded in VRML format so that it is possible to access and view the model via the World Wide Web. [Termes IGN] VRMLRésumé : (Auteur) Three-dimensional photo-models are object models with texture information taken from photographs. They can be used, among other things, to present structural projects to the public and decision-makers. The geometrical modeling of our photo-model is supported by assumptions on the object shape. These assumptions are introduced as fictitious feature observations into the process of hybrid bundle block adjustment. The resulting geometrical model is then filled with texture by projecting the original photographs onto it. A suitable data format for such purposes is VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language) because such three-dimensional photo-models can be made available over the Internet. In addition, they can be combined very easily with other media such as texts, sounds, images, movies and, because of that, may serve as a basis for information systems. [Termes IGN] VRMLRésumé : (Auteur) Close range photogrammetry projects rely upon a clear and unambiguous specification of end-user requirements to inform decisions relating to the format, coverage, accuracy and complexity of the final deliverable. Invariably such deliverables will be a partial and incomplete abstraction of the real world where the benefits of higher accuracy and increased complexity must be traded against the cost of the project. As photogrammetric technologies move into the digital era, computerisation offers opportunities for the photogrammetrist to revisit established mapping traditions in order to explore new markets. One such market is that for three-dimensional Virtual Reality (VR) models for clients who have previously had little exposure to the capabilities, and limitations, of photogrammetry and may have radically different views on the cost/benefit trade-offs in producing geometric models. This paper will present some examples of the authors' recent experience of such markets, drawn from a number of research and commercial projects directed towards the modelling of complex man-made objects. This experience seems to indicate that suitably configured digital image archives may form an important deliverable for a wide range of photogrammetric projects and supplement, or even replace, more traditional CAD models. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) The problem of generalizing spatial data sets has been studied in the context of categorical data. Map Algebra, a deterministic modeling language, has been chosen as the modeling language for the generalization transformations. The methodology is based on simple basic Map Algebra functions, which are brought together and run as a sequenced batch file. From the basic Map Algebra functions, several individual generalization transformations have been composed ; the three most important are described extensively in the paper. The two major practical projects implemented with the automatic generalization transformations are presented. Finally, the results of the methodological development for generalizing categorical databases are presented and the prospects for extending the methodology are discussed.
