[Termes IGN] visionRésumé : (auteur) Measuring perceptions of visual walkability in urban streets and exploring the associations between the visual features of the street built environment that make walking attractive to humans are both theoretically and practically important. Previous studies have used either environmental audits and subjective evaluations that have limitations in terms of cost, time, and measurement scale, or computer-aided audits based on natural street view images (SVIs) but with gaps in real perception. In this study, a virtual reality panoramic image-based deep learning framework is proposed for measuring visual walkability perception (VWP) and then quantifying and visualizing the contributing visual features. A VWP classification deep multitask learning (VWPCL) model was first developed and trained on human ratings of panoramic SVIs in virtual reality to predict VWP in six categories. Second, a regression model was used to determine the degree of correlation of various objects with one of the six VWP categories based on semantic segmentation. Furthermore, an interpretable deep learning model was used to assist in identifying and visualizing elements that contribute to VWP. The experiment validated the accuracy of the VWPCL model for predicting VWP. The results represent a further step in understanding the interplay of VWP and street-level semantics and features. However, the authorities and urban experts show hesitancy in endorsing these tools in their practices. Indeed, several parameters must be wisely considered in the design of VGE; if misjudged, their impact could be damaging for the participatory approach and the related urban project. The objective of this study is to engage participants (N = 107) with common tasks conducted in participatory sessions, in order to evaluate the users’ performance when manipulating a VGE. We aimed at assessing three crucial parameters: (1) the VGE representation, (2) the participants’ idiosyncrasies, and (3) the nature of the VGE format. The results demonstrate that the parameters did not affect the same aspect of users’ performance in terms of time, inputs, and correctness. The VGE representation impacts only the time needed to fulfill a task. The participants’ idiosyncrasies, namely age, gender and frequency of 3D use also induce an alteration in time, but spatial abilities seem to impact all characteristics of users’ performance, including correctness. Lastly, the nature of the VGE format significantly alters the time and correctness of users interactions. The results of this study highlight concerns about the inadequacies of the current VGE practices in participatory sessions. Moreover, we suggest guidelines to improve the design of VGE, which could enhance urban participatory planning processes, in order to create better cities. [Termes IGN] Time-geographyRésumé : (auteur) The past couple of decades have witnessed tremendous growth of location-based social media activities (LBSMA) data in virtual spaces, including virtual geographic environments. Such data become innovative resources for the analysis of human activities. Meanwhile, a shift of human interactions from geographical spaces to virtual spaces has been observed. Although this is an exciting research opportunity, it also imposes significant challenges on GIScience, as current GIS representation models are no longer sufficient to handle the increased sophistication of human activities data. This research formalizes an ontology for LBSMA data and a conceptual framework for representing such data in GIS. The framework contributes to GIScience as it enables interconnections of human activities in both the physical and virtual worlds to be represented, organized, retrieved, analyzed, and visualized. The proposed GIS representation model integrates a social dimension into the existing spatial–temporal representation models and allows data analysis in the spatial–temporal–social (STS) dimensions. The research tested this conceptual framework with a prototype and a case study using Facebook data. The prototype and the case study prove that the proposed framework can significantly enhance GIS capabilities for data organization, retrieval, and analysis of LBSMA data in STS dimensions. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) In human computer interaction, proxemics describes the ways that people use space to interact with other people or objects. We focus on proxemic maps, which are virtual maps in immersive environments that react to proxemic interaction. Proxemic maps take advantage of new opportunities brought about by immersive visualization, where virtual maps can be freely positioned in virtual or physical space and adapt themselves relative to the spatial position of the viewer. We discuss proxemic interactions that alter the content and type of maps, including changing scale, symbolization, type of visualization and geometry. We propose a novel transformation that changes the geometry of maps based on their proximity to users. Users move the map back and forth and the map transitions between ring, horizontal, vertical and cylindrical geometries. The ring geometry surrounds the user and aligns features on the map with features in the real world. We implemented the map transformation in virtual reality and conducted a user study to evaluate it. The results of the user study indicate that participants preferred the ring and horizontal geometries. The ring geometry is useful because it simplifies connecting virtual features on the map with real features in the landscape, while the horizontal geometry provides an overall view of the landscape. We further found that combination of different geometries helped the study participants to overcome the limitations of each geometry.
