[Termes IGN] visualisation 3DRésumé : (Auteur) Spatial information systems normally allow a two-dimensional modeling and presentation of a three-dimensional world. These strategies reduce three-dimensional objects to two-dimensional models, where the reduction is related to a significant loss of information. Loss of information may be accepted for a multitude of applications but it leads to undesirable restrictions on information systems that depend on an adequate presentation and analysis of a three-dimensional world. One of these applications are urban information systems, especially where the visualization of urban elements and the propagation of their functionality is described.
This thesis deals with the development of distributed urban 3D information systems on basis of open standards derived from Internet/Web technologies. It considers the application of standards for the implementation of client/server systems and user interfaces.
The main emphasis of the thesis is the presentation of three-dimensional objects in an information system. It covers the visualization of objects in a virtual 3D world and the development of suitable human computer interfaces that make it possible to access the objects and their functionality.
For the design and modeling process of objects, concrete guidelines that consider human perception of 3D objects are devised. Problems related to the user exploring a 3D scene are discussed, as the user interface for a 3D information system is designed.
Contemporary user interfaces offer a graphical 2D user interface (GUI). In a 2D GUI, objects are represented by two-dimensional models. Using three-dimensional representations new user requirements arise relating to the navigation and interaction in a virtual 3D world. Hence the user should be supported by the introduction of metaphors. Therefore the town metaphor, which is especially important for urban information systems, is introduced and is expanded into the idea of a campus metaphor.
The other main emphasis of the thesis is the practical application of the ideas described above. Consequently the 3D campus information system of the Karlsruhe University (CISKA) has been developed and implemented in the framework of this thesis. CISKA has been developed on the basis of common Internet/Web standards and offers a real-time exploration of the university campus in 3D. With the help of a standard Web-browser the user is able to move in a three-dimensional environment and to interact with the three-dimensional objects over the Internet. [Termes IGN] visualisation 3DRésumé : (Auteur) Photogrammetry has many advantages as a technique for the acquisition of three-dimensional models for virtual reality. But the traditional photogrammetric process to extract 3D geometry from multiple images is often considered too labour-intensive. In this paper a method is presented with which a polyhedral object model can be efficiently derived from measurements in a single image combined with geometric knowledge on the object. Man-made objects can often be described by a polyhedral model and usually many geometric constraints are valid. These constraints are inferred during image interpretation or may even be extracted automatically. In this paper different types of geometric constraints and their use for object reconstruction are discussed. Applying more constraints than needed for reconstruction will lead to redundancy and thereby to the need for an adjustment. The redundancy is the basis for reliability that is introduced by testing for possible measurement errors. The adjusted observations are used for object reconstruction in a separate step. Of course the model that is obtained from a single image will not be complete, for instance due to occlusion. An arbitrary number of models can be combined using similarity transformations based on the coordinates of common points. The information gathered allows for a bundle adjustment if highest accuracy is strived for. In virtual reality applications this is generally not the case, as quality is mainly determined by visual perception. A visual aspect of major importance is the photo-realistic texture mapped to the faces of the object. This texture is extracted from the same (single) image. In this paper the measurement process, the different types of constraints, their adjustment and the object model reconstruction are treated. A practical application of the proposed method is discussed in which a texture mapped model of a historic building is constructed and the repeatability of the method is assessed. The application shows the feasibility of the method and the potential of photogrammetry as an efficient tool for the production of 3D models for virtual reality applications. [Termes IGN] VRMLRésumé : (Auteur) Three-dimensional photo-models are object models with texture information taken from photographs. They can be used, among other things, to present structural projects to the public and decision-makers. The geometrical modeling of our photo-model is supported by assumptions on the object shape. These assumptions are introduced as fictitious feature observations into the process of hybrid bundle block adjustment. The resulting geometrical model is then filled with texture by projecting the original photographs onto it. A suitable data format for such purposes is VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language) because such three-dimensional photo-models can be made available over the Internet. In addition, they can be combined very easily with other media such as texts, sounds, images, movies and, because of that, may serve as a basis for information systems.
