[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (auteur) During the cartographic generalisation process, geographic objects cannot just be considered one by one. The way objects are processed clearly depends on their spatial context. In this paper, we first study the nature of spatial context encountered dur ing map generalisation. We differentiate three kinds of relations that an object can have with its environment: being part of a significant group, being in a particular area, being in relation with 'same-level' surrounding objects. We also address the issue of scale- dependency related to spatial context. Then, we study how to represent context-related knowledge in a knowledge-based approach of cartographic generalisation. We discuss several aspects of the representation of objects' spatial context in a geographic data model dedicated to map generalisation: explicit representations of high-level objects, fuzzy representation of objects and relations, multi- scale representation of objects and relations, spatialisation of relations. We also study how context appears in the rules expr essed by cartographers to describe the generalisation process: it can be used to express exceptions, to classify typical operations to b e done, or to express constraints on the final result. [Termes IGN] système expertRésumé : (auteur) A crucial requirement for the effective exploitation of geographic information is users' access to the knowledge held in corresponding stored resources, i.e. their understanding of what can be derived from available geographic databases and software. At the core of it is the problem of how to share and reuse knowledge, a major current challenge of Artificial Intelligence (Al). The work presented here extends upon lessons learnt in Al. The proposed solution to the users’ access issue is an expert system that stores geographical knowledge derivation recipes, and that allows users to browse and customise these recipes. Specifically, we build a model representing the recipes components, i.e. geographic application patterns. This model structures metadata about geographic data and metadata about stored processes, and it describes the usage of these data and processes. A prototype of this system, coded in Java, is presented in this paper. [Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (Auteur) Two developments in cartography mark an epistemic break with the assumption that maps are unproblematic communication devices. These are 1) investigations of maps as practices of power-knowledge; and 2) ‘geographic visualization’ (GVis) which uses the map's power to explore, analyze and visualize spatial datasets to understand patterns better. These developments are key components of a ‘maps as social constructions’ approach, emphasizing the genealogy of power in mapping practices, and enabling multiple, contingent and exploratory perspectives of data. Furthermore, this approach is an opportunity for cartography to renew its relationship with a critical human geography.
