[Termes IGN] SIG 3DRésumé : (Auteur) This article explores the use of daytime population distributions for vehicle route planning in urban environments when proximity to population is a major consideration. A GIS-based stochastic geocoding algorithm is proposed to generate daytime population distribution patterns using travel survey data. Metropolitan Melbourne in Australia is used as a test case with data collected from the Victorian Activity and Travel Survey between 1994 and 1999. The advantage of employing daytime population distributions for vehicle route planning is then illustrated taking dangerous goods delivery and mobile billboard advertising as examples. Analysis suggests that the proposed algorithm generates population distribution patterns with finer spatial and temporal details than that obtained using other estimation methods. The algorithm also eliminates the problem of over- or under-estimation of population associated with previous attempts using travel survey data and therefore provides more accurate results. [Termes IGN] XMLRésumé : (Auteur) Earth science research and applications usually use Distributed Geospatial Information Processing (DGIP) services and powerful computing capabilities to extract information and knowledge from large volumes of distributed geospatial data. Conceptually, such processing can be abstracted into a logical model that utilizes geospatial domain knowledge to produce new geospatial products. Using this idea, the geo-tree concept and the proposed geospatial Abstract Information Model (AIM) have been used to develop a Grid workflow engine complying with geospatial standards and the Business Process Execution Language. Upon a user's request, the engine generates virtual geospatial data/information/knowledge products from existing DGIP data and services. This article details how to (1) define and describe the AIM in XML format, (2) describe the process logically with an AIM, including the geospatial semantic logic, (3) conceptually describe the process of producing a particular geospatial product step by step from raw geospatial data, (4) instantiate AIM as a concrete Grid-service workflow by selecting the optimal service instances and data sets, and (5) design a Grid workflow engine to execute the concrete workflows to produce geospatial products. To verify the advantages and applicability of this Grid-enabled virtual geospatial product system, its performance is evaluated, and a sample application is provided. [Termes IGN] visualisation de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) The use of bars to represent numeric values in desktop virtual environments that provide information in 3D through monocular depth cues is evaluated. Using empirical experiments we test hypotheses regarding the effectiveness of participants in judging the heights of different bar combinations in four different settings (static 2D and 3D desktop virtual environment with and without frames). The results show that the participants are highly successful in identifying the taller of two bars. However, there are significant differences between the static 2D and 3D desktop virtual environment settings in terms of accuracy and task completion times when comparing bars. Characteristics such as the participant's spatial abilities or the position of the bars in the landscape do not influence the effectiveness of the judgements in our study. [Termes IGN] Time-geographyRésumé : (Auteur) Today, the opportunity for potential human activity has gone beyond physical space to virtual space. Based on a proposed conceptual framework that models the relationships between physical and virtual spaces, this paper presents an attempt to adjust the space-time prism concept of Haumlgerstrand's time geography to identify potential activity opportunities in virtual space, focusing on the virtual space access channels available in physical space. A three-dimensional (3D) spatio-temporal Geographic Information System (GIS) design has been developed in this research to accommodate the adjusted space-time prism concept to support the representation, visualization, and analysis of potential human activities and interactions in physical and virtual spaces using the prism representation. Following the design, a prototype system has been successfully implemented in a 3D GIS environment. Such a system can provide powerful analytical tools for studies related to potential human activities and applications such as location-based services (LBS) and accessibility analysis in the information age.
