[Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) It has become increasingly important in spatial equity studies to understand activity spaces – where people conduct regular out-of-home activities. Big data can advance the identification of activity spaces and the understanding of spatial equity. Using the Los Angeles metropolitan area for the case study, this paper employs geotagged Twitter data to delineate activity spaces with two spatial measures: first, the average distance between users’ home location and activity locations; and second, the area covered between home and activity locations. The paper also finds significant relationship between the spatial measures of activity spaces and neighborhood spatial and socioeconomic characteristics. This research enriches the literature that aims to address spatial equity in activity spaces and demonstrates the applicability of big data in urban socio-spatial research. [Termes IGN] volcanologieRésumé : (auteur) The morning of November 23, 2013, a lava fountain formed from the New South-East Crater (NSEC) of Mt. Etna (Italy), one of the most active volcanoes in Europe. The explosive activity was observed from two ground-based radars, the X-band polarimetric scanning and the L-band Doppler fixed-pointing, as well as from a thermal-infrared camera. Taking advantage of the capability of the microwave radars to probe the volcanic plume and extending the volcanic ash radar retrieval (VARR) methodology, we estimate the mass eruption rate (MER) using three main techniques, namely surface-flux approach (SFA), mass continuity-based approach (MCA), and top-plume approach (TPA), as well as provide a quantitative evaluation of their uncertainty. Estimated exit velocities are between 160 and 230 m/s in the paroxysmal phase. The intercomparison between the SFA, MCA, and TPA methods, in terms of retrieved MER, shows a fairly good consistency with values up to $2.4\times 10^{6}$ kg/s. The estimated total erupted mass (TEM) is $3.8\times 10^{9}$ , $3.9\times 10^{9}$ , and $4.7\times 10^{9}$ kg for SFA with L-band, X-band, and thermal-infrared camera, respectively. Estimated TEM is between $1.7\times 10^{9}$ kg and $4.3\times 10^{9}$ for TPA methods and $3.9\times 10^{9}$ kg for the MCA technique. The SFA, MCA, and TPA results for TEM are in fairly good agreement with independent evaluations derived from ground collection of tephra deposit and estimated to be between $1.3\,\,\pm \,\,1.1\times 10^{9}$ and $5.7\times 10^{9}$ kg. This article shows that complementary strategies of ground-based remote sensing systems can provide an accurate real-time monitoring of a volcanic explosive activity. [Termes IGN] zone tamponRésumé : (auteur) Indoor objects’ accessible area generation considering distance constraints is of important realistic significance for spatial analysis. To the best of our knowledge, few studies have been conducted on indoor accessible area generation considering distance constraints. And because of different spatial characteristics between indoor and outdoor environment, the commonly used approach in outdoor space is not suitable for indoor space. In this paper, based on the hybrid spatial data model of geometric and symbolic model, an accessible area generation approach considering distance constraints for indoor environment is proposed by improving traditional spatial buffer zone generation technique. The buffer zone generation with a predefined distance around indoor objects within their located subspace is executed first; then, based on the indoor spatial connectivity, buffer generation around exit points is successively executed in its next connected subspaces until the distance decreases to zero. The merge of these generated buffer zones is the result of accessible area generation with a predefined distance constraint. During the process, two kinds of spatial search strategies, depth-first search and breadth-first search, are presented. Two sets of experiments are conducted to validate the correctness and efficiency of the proposed approach. Results show that the approach can be effectively used to solve the problem of indoor objects’ accessible area generation with distance constraints. Moreover, the potential use, as well as the limitation of the proposed approach is discussed in this paper. [Termes IGN] réseau routierRésumé : (Auteur) A better understanding of the relationship between the structure and functions of urban and suburban spaces is one of the avenues of research still open for geographical information science. The research presented in this paper develops several graph-based metrics whose objective is to characterize some local and global structural properties that reflect the way the overall building layout can be cross-related to the one of the road layout. Such structural properties are modeled as an aggregation of parcels, buildings, and road networks. We introduce several computational measures (Ratio Minimum Distance, Minimum Ratio Minimum Distance, and Metric Compactness) that respectively evaluate the capability for a given road to be connected with the whole road network. These measures reveal emerging sub-network structures and point out differences between less-connective and more-connective parts of the network. Based on these local and global properties derived from the topological and graph-based representation, and on building density metrics, this paper proposes an analysis of road and building layouts at different levels of granularity. The metrics developed are applied to a case study in which the derived properties reveal coherent as well as incoherent neighborhoods that illustrate the potential of the approach and the way buildings and roads can be relatively connected in a given urban environment. Overall, and by integrating the parcels and buildings layouts, this approach complements other previous and related works that mainly retain the configurational structure of the urban network as well as morphological studies whose focus is generally limited to the analysis of the building layout. [Termes IGN] sphèroïdeRésumé : (auteur) The method used by senior geodetic engineer Jean-Georges Affholder to determine what can be termed as the ‘centre of gravity’ of physical Europe in 1989 and 2004 relies on mathematical formulae which, in their only published version, happen to be flawed with typographical errors that do not reflect Mr. Affholder’s actual mathematical exactness. This short epistemological paper summarizes the major steps of Affholder’s method, provides a corrected version of the general formulae, and briefly recalls some particulars of the specific determination of the centre of gravity of physical Europe.
